Most people think of Walden Pond as a beloved natural space, but few consider how the Massachusetts State Reservations has been consciously re-constructed to match cultural expectations. One hundred years ago, the Pond was anything but pre-eminent nature, with a train stop, an amusement park, and large parts of the forest logged out.
