Watchtowers in Kaiping, southern China
The oldest surviving watchtower (or diaolou) was built more than 400 years ago to protect the villagers from thieves and floods. The rest were mostly built from the 1900's to the 30's using money sent home from Chinese who worked in North America. Some of them never made it home though. Those photos were taken in Feb 2006.
