The Rothwell Sanctuary's situated on the eastern slopes of the You Yangs, only about 30 minutes from Melbourne. Completely predator-proof-fenced, it's a huge rocky outcrop and area of grassland and forest with commanding views of Melbourne in the distance. Herein are most of the remanining few hundred mainland Eastern-barred Bandicoots in Australia. Decades ago, they were salvaged from a remote site in country Victoria and it's only because of the work of the Rothwell Sanctuary that they still exist today. We saw several during the evening. It rained as we arrived. As we were donning coats and even before we'd passed through the gate, a Southern Brown Bandicoot bounded across the road just inside. As the last shafts of sun began to fade. http://aussiebirding.wildiaries.com/trips/10603
