Rodney Applegate has returned to northern India twenty times since his first visit ten years ago. With his friend Lama Tashi Bapu, a Tibetan monk whom he met in 2001, Applegate has worked to improve sanitation and health education in Arunachal Pradesh, a remote state in northeastern India that borders China, Burma, and Bhutan. The region, much of which is in the Himalayan mountain range, once belonged to old Tibet. Today, ancient Tibetan traditions endure in the small villages of this region, for better and for worse.
