This is where the Wakan, the Dakota Indian name for the "Rum River", merges with the Mississippi River. The sacred Dakota name for the "Rum River" means Spirit or Great Spirit. The confluence of the Wakan/"Rum" and Mississippi rivers is a sacred part of the Dakota Indians traditional/ ancestrial homeland and it is also a sacred Dakota site. There is a local, national and international movement to change the name of the "Rum River" back to its sacred Dakota name. This movement's website is located at: http://www.towahkon.org
