The story of 56th Fighter Group Pilot Robert S. Johnson's epic battle in the skies of France to bring his devastated P-47 Thunderbolt back home after being attacked during an escort mission on June 26th 1943.Johnson was knocked unconscious by a Canon Shell hit from a FW-190 at 26,000 Feet and awoke at just 6000 Feet.He tried to escape by bailing out but was trapped as the canon shell had damaged the sliding mechanism of the canopy. With no-other choice he brought the aircraft under control, only to be spotted by Egon Mayer of JG-26.Mayer brought his 190 in behind Johnson's P-47 on three occasions, and yet still the P-47 stayed in the air. Mayer then flew on Johnson's wing to the coast of France before saluting him and leaving him to his fate. This video using Flight Simulation footage tells that story, and since being released in 2007 has been watched over 500,000 times. The quality is not fantastic, having been compressed, but hopefully you will enjoy the story which lef Johnson to declare it was "Not my time to die!"
