      Veteran James was recruited by the Marines right out of High School. Boot camp beatup his knees and resulted in 2 operations and eventually a 'other the honorable' discharge. With help of American Legion he was able to overturn and upgrade his discharge to honorable and now works helping veterans to receive the benefits they have earned. Thank you for your service Lloyd!

      Veteran Smith retired from the US Navy with 22 years of service. He first enlisted in 1944 while still in high school...he says he would rather have enlisted in the Navy then be drafted into the Army. After training he was stationed on the USS Kinser (sp) an APD...a high speed transport built on a destroyer hull and could carry about 90 troops. In the Pacific they carried Marine recon groups. Smith was at the Battle of Okinawa..they off loaded the Marines on the smaller islands around Okinawa,...

      Veteran Hazelton served with the 29th Special Construction Battalion...SEABEES. It was their job to build airstrips, landing docks and to backup the Marines whenever possible. Phil did alot of island hopping. After the Marines had secured an area his group would go in, build camps and airstrips. The Seabees got so good at damage estimates they could tell how much dirt would be required to repair a bomb crater before the bomb even hit the ground.       Veteran Johnson was with the 28th Marines of the 5th Division. He was with the Marines that put the flag on Iwo Jima, where he lost many close friends. He is one of 6 Marines plus a Navy doctor who survived in his group. He wishes people could see the military memorial at the gate of Arlington which puts on a patriotic show.       Veteran Titus was drafted in October of 1942 and served in the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in Marfat (sp) Texas and after two years decided not to apply for officer candidate school because he thought he had it nice & safe, until the Battle of the Bulge.
