This is the virtual 3D studio of Sky News. On the large news wall behind the presenter’s desk, visitors can click through various backgrounds (the same that have been used in the real studio) and also watch the latest headline news from a feed that is automatically updated all the time. To the right of the presenter’s desk is the weather wall. Here visitors can watch the latest weather report.
Exploring the desks in the virtual Sky News studio, visitors find different kinds of media embedded in the monitors. For example, they can watch videos of people describing their job and how it ties in to the bigger picture of producing news. The videos are located at the desk at which that person would actually be sitting at.
The reception area of the virtual 3D version of Sky News is very similar to the real one. Visitors are greeted by this welcome video read by news presenter Julie Etchingham (now no longer with Sky News). // More information on this project will shortly be available on my site - www.twofroggs.com
Virtual environments are becoming the alternate global interface, connecting the whole world in one place. The combination of real-time text chat, voice integration and object and identity persistence, opens the doors to global collaborations across time zones, physical, cultural and political boundaries. The potential for unique user generated collaborations is vast.
Virtual worlds hold great potential. Thinking in terms of current news events, they can help users better understand real world issues by allowing them to get closer to scenes of importance, engage with objects of relevance and dissect complicated ideas, like how an energy saving house works.
Reuters have done a great job at trying to tap into this phenomenon of a "virtual world". They built a news bureau in SL that is based on their London and New York offices. A news ticker circles the outside of the building and inside you can watch Reuters packages. Visitors can also enter theme specific chat areas, where they can sit and discuss a wide variety of current issues. Thanks to a heads-up display you don’t have to be at Reuters to be notified of such discussions. Clicking on a topic...
