About the series: The Alex and Lena Casper Memorial Lectures on Social Issues and Current Events was endowed by the late Isidor Casper, a prominent Middletown attorney, to honor the memory of his parents. The inaugural lecture was given by US Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas on September 28, 1973.About this year's lecturer: Richard Haass is President of the Council on Foreign Relations, a position he has held since July 2003. The Council, based in New York with an office in Washington, DC, is an independent, national membership organization and a nonpartisan center for scholars dedicated to producing and disseminating ideas so that individual and corporate members, as well as policymakers, journalists, students, and interested citizens in the United States and other countries, can better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other governments. He has also served as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell and as National Security Advisor to President George H.W. Bush.
