(Marquette, Michigan) - The Northern Michigan University Native American Student Association invites everyone to attend the 17th annual “Learning to Walk Together” traditional pow-wow.The pow-wow will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Northern Michigan University (NMU) Vandament Arena in Marquette, Mich.Admission is free to NMU students, elders and children under 13. For everyone else the cost is $3.The grand entry times are noon and 6 p.m. Four Thunder is the host drum.The head veteran dancer is former NMU Adjunct Professor Don Chosa of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa Indians in Nett Lake, Minnesota.The Head Dancers are Mike and Michelle Willis.Emcee is Dwight “Bucko” Teeple and the arena director is Robert Blackdeer.Iroquois Kitchen is the food vendor.The Feast Meal will be held at 4 p.m. at the NMU D.J. Jacobetti Center featuring the 8th annual Hand Drum Competition plus dancers and singers from all over the Great Lakes region. The pow-wow is presented by the Native American Student Association of NMU and is made possible by support from the following NMU departments:The Center for Native American Studies, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Professional Studies, the Ethnic and Cultural Diversity Committee, Graduate Studies/Continuing Education, Math and Computer Science, the Multicultural Education and Resource Center and the School of Education, the Casa Calabria restaurant, the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and the National Endowment for the Arts.Organizers give special thanks to Chris Kibit and the NMU Culinary Arts Program and the P.E.I.F. staff.For more information or to volunteer call 906-227-1397 or email the NMU Center for Native American Studies.More information can be found on the NMU Center for Native American Studies website.Vendors must register in advance.
