Ithaca, NY. Activists across the nation are demanding that TIAA-CREF, one of the largest financial services in the US, stop investing in companies that profit off of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian lands and peoples.. Despite their slogan of “financial services for the greater good,” they have recently censored a shareholder resolution calling for an investigation of these companies, and have moved their annual shareholder’s meeting from New York City to Charlotte, NC, in an attempt to avoid protests. Despite their efforts to dodge protests, activists turned out out in force in dozens of other cities on July 19th, the day of the Shareholder Meeting, to prove them wrong, to shame them for their act of censorship, and to draw attention to the realities of occupation. Ithaca, NY was one of many cities across the U.S. whee activists rallied with only hours notice to call for the release of the Audacity of Hope. On Friday, July 1, 2011, the U.S. Boat to Gaza - The Audacity of Hope - was stopped by the Greek Coast Guard. After a stand off that unfolded over several hours a 2nd Greek Coast Guard boat arrived. This boat carried heavily armed Greek commandos and this shifted the dynamic. Soon after a decision was made to bring the boat back to a dock in Athens, not the same one the boat had previously been at. Once docked we learned that the Greek authorities are most likely going to bring some type of charges against the captain of our boat, and that should happen tomorrow (Saturday) morning. In solidarity with the captain, most of the passengers and other crew members decided to spend the night on the boat. We do not yet know what their plans are for tomorrow, or what the next steps in all of this will be. As soon as we find out we will get word to you all. The good news today was the tremendous outpouring of calls and emails sent to the Greek Embassy in Washington, DC as well as Greek consulates around the country. Many people have also contacted the U.S. State Dept. urging them to stop supporting the Israeli efforts to undermine the flotilla. Meg has worked with a number of citizen groups to keep nuclear waste out of Allegheny County and has spent years supporting efforts of groups in Allegheny, Livingston, Yates, Ontario, and Stuben counties.Tom builds musical instruments, including the acoustic instruments used in this performance. Most of his work is done with antique hand tools in his shop in Arkport, NY. He also specializes in life-like sculpture and fine woodworking. In mid-July of 2009, Peace Now Ithaca, a local group in the Fingerlakes rgion of upstate New York that had organized a successful campaign to designate Ithaca a Sanctuary City for war resisters, received word that 21-year old Iraq veteran and conscientious objector, Josh Sieber, was on a trek across the nation and wanted to come to Ithaca. With the help and cooperation of the Ithaca and Perry City Friends Meetings, the Social Justice Council of the Ithaca Unitarian Church, the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance and annual Peace Forum, we organized a potluck dinner to meet Josh, a local Peace Walk with him, and arranged for his participation at the festival. Joining Josh on the walk were Plowshares and Catholic Workeractivist Ellen Grady, her daughter Saoirse, Peace Now Ithaca activistBob Nape, and videographer Cris McConkey. At the festival, Josh met up with former medic and conscientious objector Michael Blake. The peace forum is an annual eventat the Fingerlakes Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance. It was started by Jolene Uticone, a widely known and loved youth worker. This video starts with the peace walk and ends with Josh's address in the Dance Tent, where he was invited to speak by the traditional Irish band the Grumblin Rustics. Citizen Soldier held a press conference June 18, 2009 in Watertown, NY just prior to Specialist Trevor Loop's appearance before a sanity board at Fort Drum later that morning. Sp/4 Trevor Loope is facing a possible court-martial trial for going AWOL. After returning to base from a combat tour in Afghanistan, he was unable to obtain needed treatment for PTSD with severe depression. He left the base for his home city of Austin, Tx. Eventually he was seen by Dr. David Ogren, a clinical psychologist from Houston who diagnosed Trevor as hsuffering from PTSD and severe depression. At the time of the press conference, it was uncertain whether Dr. Ogren would be allowed to address the sanity board. Specialist Trevor Loope, 23, of Austin TX, served 15 months in Afghan combat with the 3d Brigade of the 10th Mountain Division. Upon returning to Ft. Drum in 2007 he was unable to obtain adequate treatment for mental health issues. This caused him to leave the base in search of effective treatment. Dr. David Ogren, a clinical psychologist from Houston, TX with fifteen years? experience treating victims of mental trauma, spent hours examining and testing Specialist Trevor Loope. Dr. Ogren's report concludes that Trevor suffers ?from a severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a Major Depression, Severe.? He also has a detailed treatment plan which was prepared by his therapist in Austin, TX. On December 3, 2009, Specialist Trevor Loope addressed Ithaca?s Common Council requesting the Common Council?s active support upon his return to the base to potentially face criminal charges for being AWOL. As of late December, it looked promising that he would get an administrative discharge. Drum commanders, however, scheduled a ?sanity board? to assess Loope?s mental health status on Thursday, June 19th 10:00 am at Ft Drum?s Mental Health facility. They also proffered criminal charges against Loope for AWOL with trial by a Special Court Martial set for July 1st, 2009. Early in June, Dr. Ogren telephoned Ft Drum?s mental health chief, Dr.Todd Benham offering to serve as an expert witness before the sanity board.. Ogren?s offer involved no expense to the military, since he is willing to pay his own travel expenses from Houston. On Monday, June 15th, Dr. Benham finally returned Ogren?s call, asking him why he had phoned. When Ogren told him of his desire to testify at Loope?s hearing, Benham remarked that that this was ?ridiculous? and that since it was a closed hearing, he didn?t think that Ogren would be allowed to testify. Dr. Ogren arrived at the base and waited in the lobby of the health center. He was invited to respond for ten minutes regarding any corrections or additions to the report he had written, a copy of which the board had already received. He was in conference much longer than ten minutes. The video was taken outside the PX facility at Ft. Drum after the sanity board. Trevor Loope, Dr. Ogren, and Tos Ensign, a lawyer who directs Citizen soldier are interviewed. Citizen Soldier, a GI/veterans rights advocacy organization based in NYC, is supporting Trevor in his struggle to receive an administrative discharge from Ft. Drum. Tod Ensign, a lawyer and Director of Citizen Soldier and co-ordinator of the Different Drummer Cafe in Watertown, accompanied Trevor to Ithaca. The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel launched a boycott in NYC of Motorolla in front of the company'scorporate office in Brooklyn on Monday, March 30. This short excerpt from Democracy Now! includes a statement by Ryvka Bar Zoharon on the Motorolla boycott. It is preceded by footage from Bil'in, Palestine showing an Israeli soldier shooting a demonstrator point blank across the separation fence. It is a proper juxtaposition, as Motorolla's Israeli subsidiary provides electronic surveillance technology that is a component of the militarized separation wall or fence.Here in Tompkins County, the Ithaca Alliance for Justice in the Middle East is considering how best to lauch the Motorolla boycott locally. And, we have good reason to do so.Bil'in is the site of a weekly demonstration against the separation wall. In 2007, video journalist Emad Bornat toured the US and Puerto Roco with Puerto Rican acttivist Tito Kayak. Emad, who had filmed Tito scaling an Israeli surveillance tower in Bil'in and unfurling a Palestinian flag, visited Ithaca on the tour where he presented his documentary work. When he is not documenting the struggle, he supports himself and his family by farming. Since his return to Bil'in, Emad was injured by a rubber bullet while videotaping the weekly protest against the wall in February of 2008. Originally planned as a protest against Bank of America on the Ithaca Commons, students & community members rallied Friday, December 12 in celebration of the victory by the 200 Republic Windows and Doors workers who had been occuping the factory in Chicago over Republic's and BoA's failure to live up to contract obligations in regard to severance pay and benefits. At the same time, news had come of a victory by workers at the Lakeside Nursing Home who had been supported on informational pick lines by students and community members, including family of residents. The third cause for celebration was a successful union vote by workers at the Smithfield Foods pork processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina. Sp/4 Trevor L. 22, of Austin, TX served 15 months in Afghan combat with the 3d Brigade, of the 10th Mountain Division. Upon returning to Ft. Drum in 2007 he was unable to obtain adequate treatment for mental health issues. This caused him to leave the base in search of effective treatment. Pvt. S. Trevor L. formerly of Ft Drum, NY addressed Ithaca?s Common Council requesting the Common Council?s active support when he returns to the base to potentially face criminal charges for being AWOL. He is returning with a psychological evaluation prepared by a trauma specialist which concludes that Trevor suffers ?from a severe Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and a Major Depression, Severe.? He also has a detailed treatment plan which was prepared by his current therapist in Austin, TX. Citizen Soldier, a GI/veterans rights advocacy organization based in NYC, is supporting Trevor in his struggle to receive an administrative discharge from Ft Drum. Tod Ensign, a lawyer and Director of Citizen Soldier and co-ordinator of the Different Drummer Caf? in Watertown accompanied Trevor to Ithaca. More than 30 veterans of five wars approached Col. Kenneth Riddle at the Watertown Armed Forces Day Parade on Saturday, requesting an opportunity to discuss the need for adequate mental health care for those serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. He recommended that they schedule an appointment to meet with him at a future date to discuss these issues. According to a recent study, more than 18 U.S. veterans commit suicide every day. More soldiers who served in Afghanistan and Iraq have died at their own hand than have those who died in combat. These soldiers and veterans did not receive the quality of care they needed. Many more are self-medicating with alcohol. Maj. Gen. Michael Oates regularly publishes the names and photographs of Fort Drum soldiers who are arrested for DWI. Rather than resorting to such humiliation, the General should address the root causes of the soldiers’ stress. The VA has covered up this problem, and the cover-up is perpetuated locally. At the parade, Jefferson County legislator, Carolyn Fitzpatrick told a local TV reporter that she hoped the veterans’ efforts to speak with Col. Riddle wouldn’t be aired. We believe it is time to air this issue and help prevent any more suicides. If you truly support our troops and our veterans, we ask that you call or write Col. Riddle and Maj. Gen. New York citizens are marching across the state to bring support to our active duty soldiers and Iraq Veterans Against the War. This march is an act of re-birthing civic duty and responsibility to defend our Constitution and strengthen our resolve to stop the damage this unjust, illegal, and immoral war is doing to our families, communities, the world and most of all, soldiers.Thursday, May 8, 2008Ithaca Feeder March The Ithaca leg of New York State Marches for Peace began its walk today with a sending off ceremony at DeWitt Park in downtown Ithaca. In great spirits forty-five of us walked through downtown Ithaca, up through Cornell, and out of town. The overall response from pedestrians and vehicular traffic was that of enthusiastic support. Walking with us were veterans from the Korean War, Vietnam War, members of Iraq Vets Against the War, teachers, mothers, children, fathers, grandparents.We arrived in Dryden a little foot sore but in good spirits. We all gathered at the Dryden Municipal Building for an evening full of good food – Macro Mama’s Peanut Lime Noodles, salad provided by the ABC Cafe – and music by Ron Christi and Terry Burns. Michael Blake, a member of IVAW, shared briefly about his experience as a conscientious objector and the work of IVAW.It was also fun to hear from the Rochester group and to hear about their successful walk today. And, by the way, the New York Times is joining us when we meet with Utica and Rochester next week on Wednesday.
