The high school sports teams in Thisweek Newspapers coverage area brought home four runner-up titles in the past week. The Burnsville girls soccer team placed second in Class AA. The Eastview boys soccer team was runner-up in Class AA. The Burnsville boys cross country team was second best in Class AA. The Lakeville South girls team also placed second in Class AA.
The Lakeville North Panthers won the crosstown battle for the second time this year after beating Lakeville South 24-14 in the Section 1-5A semifinals on Saturday, Oct. 29. The Panthers had never beaten South twice in the same season, but accomplished the feat by common g back from a 14-6 halftime deficit.
The University of Minnesota couldn’t have picked a better day to turn on its new 426-foot tall wind turbine at UMore Park in Rosemount on Tuesday, Oct. 25. With gusts blowing up to 27 mph from the northeast, the estimated 200 people in attendance probably would have preferred a warmer day, but didn’t mind too much as they huddled on bleachers at the commissioning ceremony.
One of the world’s best K-9 police units traveled nearly 500 miles to train at the Flint Hills Resources Training Facility in Rosemount. Twenty-three officers and 20 canines from the Winnipeg Police Service K-9 Unit and other local K-9 units practiced tracking human scents on the grounds during a week-long class led by the Eagan Police Department’s K-9 Unit.
Students and parents from Greenleaf Elementary in Apple Valley came out in support of National Walk and Bike to School Day on October 5. With help from parent volunteer crossing guards, students made their way across Galaxie Avenue to the school. Apple Valley High School with the help of Apple Valley Police and Fire Departments and North Memorial airlift crews conducted a mock car crash in the south section of the high school parking lot the morning of Thursday, Sept. 29. The high school puts on a mock crash every other year to emphasize to students the seriousness of drinking and driving and the tragic consequences that can result. Members of Holly's Centre Stage Dance in Lakeville performed to Bruce Springsteen's song, "My City of Ruin," during a Sept. 11 memorial service at the Minnesota State Capitol on the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. The Burnsville Fire Muster Fire Truck Parade also paid tribute to those who died in the terrorist attacks.
Students throughout Dakota County returned to classes this week for the start of the 2011 2012 school year. In addition to discovering new things about math, science and reading, the students learned about new bus routes, locker assignments and their new teachers. Warm weather and sunny skies greeted the thousands of participants and attendees of the Rosemount Leprechaun Days Grand Parade on Saturday, July 30 in the downtown area. The parade including an estimated 100 units, several from Rosemount High School, community service groups and much more.
