I have this knack for getting in things a little too deep. Take video for instance. I was not satisfied to shoot video with a tiny consumer camera, so I went out on a limb and bought a professional video camera kit. I then set out to film railroads all over the northeastern USA and release the results on DVD. It was this last little detail that got me knee-deep in snow on top of an ice covered brook in New Hampshire's White Mountains in January. That's where the action was. It turns out that I ended up knee-deep in snow all day long and discovered that the duct tape that was holding my boots together was not waterproof. At least I had warm socks on. It didn't matter that they were soaked by the end of the day. Maybe it was a little too deep, but it was well worth it. My socks were half-dried by the time we got home and I felt satisfied that it was a day well spent. I had gone in some deep snow and gotten some great footage. What more could I ask?The result was Steam in the Snow. 33 minutes of Conway Scenic Railroad's first ever non-Christmas wintertime outing. The web version is only about 17 minutes long. Check it out. Then head over to Black5video.com and pick up the DVD for $24.95 USD plus $4.95 USD for shipping. It'll be a half hour well spent. Best of all, you won't have to get your socks wet.-Aaron GonthierBlack 5 Productions, LC
