A neanderthal in the woodworking world is someone who uses only hand tools. That's me, although it's not entirely by choice! The Neanderthal Apprentice chronicles my journey in the world of woodworking with hand tools. I plan to share projects I'm working on and techniques I'm using or considering, and am looking to the woodworking community at large to provide feedback and criticism, as appropriate.Feel free to stop by my blog, Adventures in Woodworking!
This is just a simple video demonstrating how I chop a mortise using a chisel. One reason this technique is supposedly better than drilling (followed by hogging out the waste) is that the levering action of the chisel helps to tidy up the walls of the mortise.I dunno about that, but this is a fairly quick way of making a decent mortise.
In conjunction with Woodworking Safety Week 2008, here is my very first attempt at a video. I think I can give The Wood Whisperer a good run for his money. I’ve got everything he has except woodworking skills, customers, power tools, a nice shop, groupies and sponsors. Other than that, we’re the same. Covered in this video are the chisel, marking knife and saw. Enjoy!
