Gardner Selby: Pants on Fire and Other Ways to Judge What Politicians Say

Since early 2010, the Austin American-Statesman's PolitiFact Texas has gauged the veracity of numerous claims in politics. Some prove True on the Truth-O-Meter, others less so--with ridiculous statements getting rated Pants on Fire. W. Gardner Selby, chief political writer for the Austin American-Statesman, has covered Texas politics and government off and on since working part-time for The Beaumont Enterprise at the Texas Capitol in 1982-83. He joined the Statesman as a reporter and columnist in 2005 having reported previously for four other newspapers at the Capitol. His background includes nearly five years as a state employee and nearly 30 parent-years as the father of two girls. One of the latest baseball books he read noted the popularity of "Horse ---" as an expression by ball players and umpires--perhaps an appropriate warm-up for the launch of PolitiFact Texas. Gardner Selby, its editor, will tell us how it came to be, share some of his experiences and take your questions and suggestions.
