4/7/13: The Reward Volunteers app was created by Cabot Creamery Cooperative to celebrate the work of volunteers with recognition and prizes. Using this app for the iPhone and internet, individuals across the country have logged over 90,000 volunteer hours for about 1,800 organizations. Reel Ending 3/13/13: Since the late 1940s, Merrill Jarvis II has been in the movie business in Vermont. He was 12 when he threaded his first projector. Jarvis eventually opened multiple theaters in the Burlington area and even owned the Flynn Theater in the 70s. His son Merrill Jarvis III took after his father and currently co-owns Merrill's Roxy Cinemas, Palace 9 and the Majestic. This year marks the end of film for theaters as digital projectors replace the 35-millimeter projectors that have been dominant since the creation of movies in the late 1800s. Over the last two weeks, the Jarvises have been switching the projectors at the Roxy and the Palace 9 from film to digital. While many patrons won't even notice the change, it is the end of an era. 12/14/12: Spencer P. Crispe is a 7th generation Vermonter and the 4th generation in his family to practice law at the Crispe & Crispe Law Firm in Brattleboro. Unlike most attorneys, Crispe is as comfortable in the mosh pit and at the skatepark as he is in the courtroom. He uses his knowledge of the law to promote the ideals of hardcore punk such as civil rights, social justice and equality. In November, Crispe celebrated 20 years of being straight edge (a completely drug, alcohol and smoke-free lifestyle) with a show at 242 Main in Burlington and a performance by his hardcore punk band My Revenge!. 1/20/13: Robert Achinda believes in miracles, and after hearing his story, some Vermonters do too. Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mr. Achinda, his wife Anna and 3 of their children fled to Tanzania in the '90s to escape civil war. The Congo conflict has become one of the bloodiest since World War II, leaving millions dead and hundreds of thousands displaced. For the past 8 years, Mr Achinda has been in the United States living separately from his family of 9. Until Mr Achinda was granted asylum, his family was not able to join him - this process took 7 years. Vermont was not the first place Mr Achinda imagined when he dreamt of America, but he has called it home for the past 6 years and has made many friends here. In the fall of 2012, Mr Achinda was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given 6 months to live. North Ferrisburgh residents Lisa and Tom Bove rallied the community in his support. The Office of Senator Patrick Leahy helped expedite the Achinda family's processing through the Department of State as well as helping to obtain visitor visas for Mr Achinda's mother and sister-in-law. Floery Mahoney and her mother Debbie Allen of the Terry F Allen Family Charitable Trust donated airplane tickets for the family and computers for the childen. The Community Bible Church rented a Charlotte home for the Achindas and local donations of furniture, food and clothing poured in from the surrounding community. After 8 years of living apart, the Achindas were reunited in late January (one son has yet to arrive) and introduced to their new home. Eva caught up with them at the Community Bible Church where a reception was being held in their honor. After undergoing intense chemotherapy, Mr Achinda's diagnosis is better than expected, and it remains to be seen if the miracles will continue. 1/27/13: The 5th Annual Get Out and Backcountry Ski Festival was held at Bolton Valley Nordic Center on Sunday. Almost 100 skiers participated in this fundraiser for the Catamount Trail Association which included instruction as well as some backcountry adventure. Stuck in VT: Joan Robinson's Final Bow at the Flynn 1/10/13: After 18 years as a leader of the education programs at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Joan Robinson is leaving behind an impressive legacy. A theatrical arts educator with a zest for life and a love of teaching, Robinson's decades of work at the Flynn have helped shape its Education Department to include programs which serve about 50,000 Vermont students each year. Her ability to integrate drama and movement into classrooms and make "Words Come Alive!" for both teachers and students is what makes Robinson's teaching style so unique. Robinson will continue teaching drama part-time at the Integrated Arts Academy at H.O. Wheeler (a school which she helped design) and will still serve as a teaching artist for Flynn programs on occasion. 1/3/13: Sometimes a good photo can play a significant role in a shelter animal's quest for a home. Kelly Schulze, the photographer behind Mountain Dog Photography, has been volunteering weekly at the Humane Society of Chittenden County since 2009 with her husband Ian, who is known as "The Cat Whisperer." They have captured 1600+ animals' photos which have helped many of them find families. 11/30/12: Ferdinand Gamache AKA as Junior, is a third generation Vermont dairy farmer who has been collecting John Deere memorabilia for the past 20 years. His wife Joyce has a collection of her own, rescuing stray cats and caring for them in the dairy barn alongside the cows. 9/12/12: The Harbor Hide-A-Way has been a fixture on Shelburne Road since 1941 when Wallace and Eleanor White first opened their doors. In the decades to follow, the Hide-A-Way became a popular restaurant known for its eccentric decor and tasty vittles, serving regulars and out of towners alike. Even Katharine Hepburn and Bob Dylan are said to have stopped by for a bite. In the 80s, the restaurant changed hands and in 1987, the Hide-A-Way closed its doors for good. For the past 25 years, it has remained vacant. An emblem to the past, its deteriorating lighthouse marked the entrance to Bay Road. Recently purchased by the DuBruls who own the neighboring Automaster, the Hide-A-Way and its surrounding buildings were demolished last week. After decades of decay, many agree this eyesore was ready to come down. But for some, watching the lighthouse fall signifies the end of an era. 8/23/12: The Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center is a popular fixture at Burlington's waterfront. For 18 years it has provided lake access to young and old alike, balancing education with recreation and doing everything they can to connect people to the lake. After a landlocked summer, Eva gets out on the water in a Carolina Skiff boat with Executive Director Kate Neubaeur, tries to stay vertical on a Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) and tags along on an adult Keelboat course. 7/28/12: John's Shoe Shop North in Richmond is closing its doors after 22 years of being in business. Owner Cindy Feloney is a third generation shoe expert and her grandfather John Plesniarski opened the first John's Shoe Shop in Burlington in 1919. Mayfred and Judy Plesniarski, Feloney’s parents, ran the second John's Shoe Shop in Hamilton, NY. A woman who knows both shoes and feet, Feloney is not closing for any pressing economic reasons. Her parents worked into their 70s and always advised their daughter against staying in business too long. 7/16/12: For the past year, artist Ken Leslie has been visiting the Vermont State House in Montpelier every other week to work on his Gold Dome Cycle. He climbs 201 stairs to its highest point, above the gold dome and below Ceres' feet, and paints one section of the view into the pages of his circular book. The finished work will show a 360 degree panorama of Montpelier made in 365 days. This event is organized by the Vermont Crafts Council and was founded to increase the visibility of the many creative people who live in our state. A Neighborhood's Future is Up in the Air 5/21/12: Burlington International Airport has grown in size over the years and this means an increase in noise for the South Burlington residents that live nearby. Under an FAA relocation program, the airport has bought about 120 homes in the areas surrounding the airport that are within the 65-decibel noise zone. Demolition permits are pending for 57 of these properties and are currently held up in appeals. But what happens to the residents who remain in this ever-evolving, partially vacant neighborhood - whether they are eligible for the relocation program or not? 5/5/12: Clay, a late night, white coats, pancakes and inspiration - what more would you expect from a Mad Scientist Workshop? 3/4/12: Sunday afternoon, a cash mob descended on Bridgeside Books in Waterbury. This new national trend has made its way to Vermont just in time for National Cash Mob Day on March 24th. Like a flash mob, cash mobs happen quickly and involve an element of surprise but in this case, the goal is to support local businesses and build community. ‎11/19/11: Did you know that the world's largest hooked rug exhibit is held in VT every year? The 15th annual Hooked in the Mountains was held at the Shelburne Museum in the round barn and included about 480 rugs, each made one loop at a time by members of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild. While the subject matter, colors and styles varied wildly, all hookers share an appreciation of this historic art form. ‎11/19/11: Did you know that the world's largest hooked rug exhibit is held in VT every year? The 15th annual Hooked in the Mountains was held at the Shelburne Museum in the round barn and included about 480 rugs, each made one loop at a time by members of the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild. While the subject matter, colors and styles varied wildly, all hookers share an appreciation of this historic art form. 10/28/11: At this year's 5th annual Vermont Tech Jam, 82 exhibitors and over 2000 people visited the old Borders store in downtown Burlington Friday and Saturday. Over 400 of the attendees were middle school and high school students from all over the state and there were talks by Governor Shumlin and IBM scientist John Cohn as well as some panel discussions. In the 1990s, the prolific Thorsen documented the vibrant Burlington music scene through the lens of his camera. "Sound Proof" includes an audio component so you can hear the actual story behind the image and some of the music that made that time so unique (check it out online here). Despite the dismal weather, people turned up for the art, the live music, the beer and the walk back in time. 9/1/11: 4 days after Tropical Storm Irene hit Vermont and the town of Waterbury is in the process of cleaning and rebuilding. Despite suffering massive property losses, the people I spoke to seemed upbeat and positive. Community spirit is high as neighbors and volunteers join together to dig in and clean up. 8/5/11-8/6/11: Burlington City Arts celebrated their 30 year anniversary this weekend with 30 hours of non-stop art. Abby Manock's large scale paintings "Monkeys Vs. Bananas" hung outside the BCA Center and audience participation was encouraged. A pop-up group exhibit called CHURCH OF CIRCUS transformed the former Outdoor Gear Exchange up the street. Add all that to the Festival of Fools, the Farmers' Market and the BCA Artist Market and you have a downtown bursting with creative energy. 5/29/11: One year ago, Paula Traynor decided to change her life. 5/13/11: Lake Champlain's record high water levels have affected many Vermonters adversely this spring. Charlie's Boat House sits at the end of North Avenue where the Winooski River meets Lake Champlain in Burlington. This historic landmark and summer fixture dates back to the 1920s. Charlie Auer was preparing to open for the summer season when the flooding began and now he is not sure what the future holds for the Auer Family Boat House. Eva visited Charlie and his sister Christine last summer in happier (and drier) times. This week she returns to the boat house to survey the water damage with Charlie. And as the rain continues, the questions still remain, does this historic landmark have a future? 4/18/11: The Vacant Lots are a garage-psych duo that formed in Burlington during the summer of 2008. Three albums later, the band's line-up has changed (drummer Brian MacFadyen was replaced by Frank Zammiello), but their hypnotizing sound remains unchanged as they prepare to play at the the prestigious Austin Psych Festival at the end of April. Eva caught up with The Vacant Lots' frontman and lyrical poet, Jared Artaud, for an interview in the basement of Seven Days (complete with the band's ; signature projection of trippy images). 4/14/11: Did you know that Vermont is among the top 10 hungriest states in the nation? And that 1 in 7 Vermont households don't have enough to eat?The Vermont Foodbank plans to distribute 8 millions pounds of food to 280 agencies who will feed 86,000 Vermonters this year. Eva visited their distribution center in Barre to meet some Barre Tech Center culinary arts students who were preparing meals in the Foodbank's production kitchen.
