Weightlifting has been a relatively dormant sport in Singapore for the past few decades. The coming Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is giving it a new lease of life. The S$100, 000 worth of funding allocated to each participating sport in the games helped secure a bigger gymnasium, more equipment and also a full-time coach for the YOG athletes and a growing group of aspiring weightlifters in Singapore. On 24 March 2010, the naked body of a Chinese woman, Ms Li Hong Yan, 24, was found floating in the lap pool of a bungalow owned by a wealthy Singaporean. Chandru Latchaman, 39, belongs to a family of about 40 members. The family has been observing the Thaipusam festival since 1969. Every year, thousands of Hindus in Singapore celebrate Thaipusam, a festival observed on the full moon day of the Tamil month, Thai. Devotees traditionally carry milk pots along a 4km journey from Serangoon Road to Tank Road. Many also carry spiked Kavadis weighing more than 20kg, to show their devotion to the Hindu deity, Lord Murugan.
