New York City--Flashback in the Washington Square saga: This posting offers further evidence of Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe's role in creating the current state of affairs ie a park under siege. At a New York Law School breakfast sponsored by Con Edison and Verizon in the first six months of the battle, Benepe fields questions about the park's poor maintenance record from Luther S. Harris, author of "Around Washington Square" and a plaintiff in a number of Wash Sq related lawsuits against the City since July 2005. (Harris also commissioned the Building Conservation Association's cost analysis study on the relocation of the fountain. See previous episode.)In this portion of Benepe's videotaped statement he claims that, contrary to popular belief and visual evidence, there had been an increase, not a reduction, in Parks dept funding for repairs and maintenance, from $200 million to $270 million. He also cites a fourfold increase in capital construction monies.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/washsqdogrun/message/247
