Back when I was a zit faced 13 year old, I would take the train into Boston and go to all the great all ages hardcore punk shows. One of my favorite bands to see was the FU's. John Sox and crew understand the intersection between punk rock and rock and roll... and the FU's always delivered the goods on stage. When the band got back together recently, I made it a point to get them on my show. Mark Duchane has been a good friend of mine for years. He plays guitar and sings for Full Powered Halo. They are a veteran band that writes catchy rock songs and their sound is influenced by the shoe gazing bands of the 90's like The Catherine Wheel and Oasis. They put on a pasionate performance at our studio, and I was fortunate to have captured the power of their sound and stage act. I have known Bruce from The Doom Buggies since I was a teenager. I've always regarded him as a talented musician. Over the years, we have bumped into eachother at various concerts and events, and I was always glad to see him and catch up on life, wives, kids, mutual friends, and mostly music. When I started doing this show, I wanted to get Bruce and his band on for an episode, we played a little email tag.... and finally, after 39 shows, we got his band in the studio. This is a good one. The Doom Buggies are tight, and they serve up a mix of catchy rock with the precision that only a veteran band can deliver. They played a memorable set of guitar powered Boston rock and roll. The songs are well crafted with great hooks. The band attacks each song with passion. The Doom Buggies give props to the Boston rock legacy by covering songs by local legends The Bags and The Outlets. They also tear through an amped up version of the Beach Boys classic "Girl don't tell me" .. but this is no cover band. These guys can climb into your head with some great original ear candy too. Their songs are powered by a ferocious twin guitar assault, and a rhythem section that hits harder than "Live at Leeds" The Doom Buggies are a force to be reckoned with, and they did not let me down with this performance. Antibodies debut disc is called "Live fast, die old school" and that title is a good indicator of their old school punk rock assault. This veteran band pounds out a tight and furious mixture of classic and hardcore influenced punk with a distinct local Boston flavor. Songs like "Grave digger" show a nihilistic influence. Other songs like "Penis Intravenous" display a crass humor that lightens everything up. Singer Tony Debaggis stalks the studio looking like GG Allin's long lost son. The brothers Santos lock in tight on bass and guitar while Mr Silver beats the drums like they are his worst enemy. Together, it all makes for great Boston punk rock. Boston has spawned some amazing rock bands in recent years, and among the latest crop are The Battleships Cometh. Battleships manage to merge hard rock and funk in a unique way. They draw from classic rock influences like Led Zep and Hendrix, and they also lay down the funk, pointing to their groove influence with a great Sly Stone cover. Lead singer Leilani wails with passion over Jon Keane's guitar acrobatics, and the tight groove of drummer Jamie Watt and bassist Mike Razo. It all adds up to a powerful live rock experience. The McGunks are a solid punk rock foursome from Rhode island. They paid their dues by playing hundreds of shows all over the place, and their live set is poweful and tight as a result of this. They embody the honest, working class spirit that is at the heart of most good local puk rock. They sing of struggles with work and girlfriends, as well as the joys of drinking and friendship. Their two minute anthems are catchy and furious. The cover versions of Kenny Rogers and Judas Preist demonstrate their variety of influences. This is a great set of New England flavored punk rock. Shakyfoot are a classic power trio. They are veterans of the New England rock scene. Their sound is influenced by heavy blues guitar powered rock legends like Hendrix and Clapton. I hear something unique and appealing in their music, and that is why I insisted that they come on my show. They have mastered the ability to improvise, but they still write cohesive songs that are all well crafted sctructurally, musically, and lyrically. They do not get lost in pointless noodling like so many mediocre jam bands. These guys know the value of a song, and each song they play sticks in your head. My particular favorite is their anthemic number called "Bust it out high" , a motivational tune complete with smoking guitar solos. Anyone who can appreciate good music can appreciate a prodigy. Dennis Taylor is just that.. This young man from Charlestown Massachusetts has mastered multiple instruments, and he can sing with soul. Dennis has amazing musical talent, and a vast knowledge and appreciation for all types of music, and he is only 14 years old. My crew and I set up the lights and microphones, and Dennis did the rest. He delivered a diverse mixture of his original R+B inspired songs, as well as interpretations of songs from a variety of styles. From Kiss to Gladys Knight, there is nothing that this kid can not sing. Dennis is a rising star, and I am happy to have caught him on my show at this stage in his career. Oi has always been a favorite genre of mine. I like the way that OI has no pretensions. OI is a raw, working class music. Oi is the purist of the many types of punk rock. Colin Moran from Western Mass band The Damaged turned me on to a young Oi band from his area called Stomping Ground. These guys are still in their mid teens, and they play with fury and reckless abandon. Stomping ground singer Trevor reminds me of early Black Flag era Henry Rollins. He stalked around the TV studio barking out lyrics while the boys in the band played hard and fast. Episode # 32 features the talented guitarist Joe Maraio and his great back up band The Whyte Trash All Stars. These guys proudly represent East Boston. They play a great, catchy, hard rocking set of originals from Joe's debut cd, Soul for Sale. Hixx are not simply a rock band.. they are an experience. The band is from Boston, however, after watching one song, you will be convinced that they are from the mythical land of Texabamasaw… a place where rednecks rule, and moonshine flows like a river. These guys deliver great parody… sometimes crossing the line into reality. It’s nice to have a band with a sense of humor on my show. Hixx will keep you laughing for the full hour episode. The Damaged are a fantastic veteran punk band from Adams, the Northwestern most corner of Massachusetts. These guys have paid their dues, and it shows in their great performance. The core of the band consists of brothers Colin and Kevin Moran. I have always thought that bands with siblings have a telepathic tightness.. and these guys prove that point. They kick out great original music with power, hardcore hooks, and a reverence to the purity of the band’s punk influences. It was great to have these guys on the show. Boston punk rock can trace it’s roots back to the punk and Oi bands that originated in England 30 years ago, and Resistance 77 are on the forefront of that British scene. They are among the best punk bands that the Midlands has ever produced. Resistance 77 has punk rock energy and attitude, with the chops to back it up. Dead Cats Dead Rats play and look like they could be brothers, but they are actually just friends. Still, they have that telepathic tightness that makes a listener think that they have been together since birth. These guys are a young trio from the North Shore of Boston. Their music is influenced by the raw and angular sounds that came out of the Sub Pop scene, before grunge became commercial. They have the angst of “Bleach” era Nirvana , mated with the raw aggression of Boston hardcore, and amplified by a hard hitting and busy rhythm section. these guys kicked out the jams on their original songs from their debut cd, and added a great cover of a Misfits tune for good measure. This was a great performance by a local band that came out of nowhere, and is heading to the top of the scene. Mark Doherty, the singer for Dead Friends, has been a friend of mine for many years. Mark is a fixture on the Boston music scene. If you go out to see punk shows in Boston, chances are that you know him. He was born and raised on the tough streets of Dorchester, and you can hear that in his music. He sings of the hardships of life in the city, and the band backs him with a brutal assualt, mixing punk and metal with memorable melodies that stick in your head. The Uncomfortables are a treasure from the Western frontiers of Massachusetts. I must say that they really rocked my world. The band is made up of the remnants of the legendary local band, The Pajama Slave Dancers. These guys came into the tiny Sonic Lobotomy studio and set the place on fire. They mix the heavy , catchy sounds of Husker Du styled hardcore with the odd time signatures of prog rock, and top it off with virtuoso guitar pyrotechnics that are in a league with Hendrix. This was a very intersting sounding band composed of veteran musicians who know how to play their instruments. they have great song writing, and plenty of lean, uncluttered voltage that can only be created by a power trio. Back in the 80′s I was at Fitchburg State College earning my degree in basket weaving, between bong hits, I would function as music director at the college radio station, WXPL. That is where Sonic Lobotomy started. I used to do a weekly punk radio show with the same name on the radio station….. Anyway…. there was this long haied dude who also worked at WXPL named Rick Desgres , and he became a good friend. He turned me on to all sorts of cool obscure music like Roky Erickson and the 13th Floor Elevators. Rick had a band called the Donut Kings. That was 1986. The band is still around today. Rick and I have kept in touch through the miracle of Facebook. I decided to have Rick’s band on the show. The Donut Kings put on a great performance of catchy originals, and some great , obscure covers. They opened up with their version of “I’m your vehicle” , a great throwback to the sexually liberated 70′s , and they did not let up after that. After the performance, we all headed down to the Beer Works for a beer soaked interview. Sometimes, a band’s name is right on target with who they are. The Beantown Boozehounds definately live up to their moniker. They are the drunkest band in Boston, and they are proud of that fact. Frontman Chad Gilligan is a graduate of Berkely School of Music,.. but you will not find him playing any Berkley jazz crap, instead he leads his band of merry alcoholics through a set of great punk music, occasionally throwing in a bit of traditional sounding mandolin. The day before this performance.. the band played a late night party to celebrate the release of their debut cd. The band was hung over on the Saturday morning that we shot this show…. yet they played in top form. I am convinced that the Boozehounds play better with more alcohol in their blood streams. The Gobshites perform a rowdy mix of Boston flavored celtic rock. Lead man Pete Depressed is also the front man for local punk favorites Meat Depressed. He is a talented band leader, and with The Gobshites, he has put together a top quality group of musicians that can rock any pub where Guiness is served. For their Sonic Lobotomy performance, the band chose to play a few traditional Irish tunes with a punk twist, and a few traditional punk tunes with an Irish twist. They also threw in a few originals. This episode is one of my favorites. The cover version of the Waterboy’s tune “Fisherman’s Blues” was incredible. I’m half Irish, and these guys made my Irish half dance like an enebriated , red headed leprechaun. Great performance. Yesterday’s Herpoes are one of a group of new, talented punk bands from Boston that play with a genuine passion that is characteristic of youthfull angst. These guys are influenced by the punk bands that their parents listened to.. like the Clash and the Jam. they bring this familiar sound into the context of Boston street punk, and bang out catchy three chord anthems that stick in your head. It’s great to see that bands like Yesterday’s Heroes are keeping the punk rock torch lit. This was a great performance by an up and coming local talent. The Murder are a new band from Boston. They play with fury and rock and roll abandon. Their songs have great hooks. They have a powerful twin guitar attack, with well constructed songs and unforgettable singalong choruses. The Bermondsey Joyriders are a punk rock supergroup of sorts. The band consists of Gary Lammin, one of the original members of Cock Sparrer, and Martin Stacey, who joined British punk band Chelsea (after Billy Idol left the band) … regardless of all this name dropping, these guys rock hard. They are able to merge the bluesy slide guitar rock and roll sound with furious punk rock. I was fortunate to have them as my guests on this episode, and they put in a memorable performance. The East End Badoes are the veteran statesmen of East London’s Oi scene. They prove that they have gotten better with age, giving a fantastic performance. Sonic Lobotomy # 14 is the first episode to feature two bands. The first half features the tight and fast rage of up coming Boston hardcore band Milo’s Syndicate. The mighty Kilslug are a Boston institution. Back in the day, I saw them a hundred times. They often played shows with hardcore punk bands like SSD, and Samhain, but their sound was in sharp contrast to the fast and furious approach of the hardcore scene. They were slower than the slowest Black Sabbath, more dissonant that the noisiest Flipper, and darker than the most satanic metal band. I had a respect for Kilslug, and what they were doing, even if their choice of deity was very different from my own. After 20 years, it is great to see them reform, and it was even better to get the band to do my show. By the end of their set, they had all but destroyed the studio, but they still managed to get the show done. We did not have to shut things down until they trashed soundman Marky Mayhem’s microphone at the end of the set. Kilsug contributed one of the best, and strangest episodes of Sonic Lobotomy so far. The Ramoniacs have a deep respect and appreciation for The Ramones. They recreated the Ramones experience with great attention to detail. Having seen the Ramones in their heyday, I was especially appreciative of the Ramoniacs performance. I felt like I was much younger as I watched the Ramoniacs rock out. It was 1985 again, I was at The Channel Club in Boston watching Joey and the boys blow the roof off the place. This was yet another fine episode of Sonic Lobotomy with another great band. Three Day Threshold are a band that has paid their dues in a thousand honkey tonk bars and clubs. They have the bad attitude of outlaw country mixed with respect for traditional bluegrass and a furious punk edge. I enjoyed their performance so much that I had difficulty cutting the show down to an hour. I have included all of the songs that they played in the studio on this web version of the show. By the time they got to their brilliant version of Morphine’s “You look like rain” ( seen at the beginning of segment #5) the band was unstoppable. 26 Beers play a vicious mix of punk and metal. They are one of Boston’s best new bands. When I got ahold of their debut cd, I was floored by the genuine anguish. With the help of common friend, English Sarah Rance, I was able to contact the band, and get them on the show. The night that we shot this show, I was short on camera people, so I forced my Dad to do camera for this episode. He is 70. He hates loud music. Drago are an old school hardcore punk rock band. Band members also play in Boston bands Darkbuster and The Blue Bloods. They mix aggressive playing and humor. Many of their songs have a nostalgia for the 80′s. These guys know how to write an anthem. Chief J Stongbow is perhaps the best wrestling song ever written. The Freeze were a band that I grew up with. I was a rebellious teen in the 80′s, and the hardcore punk scene in Boston was a great place to feel a part of something. The Freeze were always playing all ages shows, and they became one of my favorite bands. They were fast and tight, and they had intelligent lyrics. I used to travel around to see them. I met my wife in 1985 at a Freeze show in Providence. I can thank Cliff and the boys for that, and the least I could do was have them on my show. I was overjoyed to have my friends in Darkbuster agree to be the first band to play the show. They are the best punk band in Boston,….. period…..They played plenty of old favorites, as well as tracks from their latest cd, “Weakness for the Spirits” There were a few technical problems , however, for the most part, things went well. The band performed brilliantly.
