This is the music video for what has since been touted as the first rap single ever released in Canada. First aired on Ottawa community radio station CKCU-FM in November 1982, "The Bum Rap" was inspired by American rappers Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five and the Canadian government's wage controls that were launched with the release of a lame promotional single called "The Six & Five Song" that was composed and performed by a government finance minister. When two unemployed hair salon trainees teamed up in 1981 at a Three Stooges film marathon the pop music world had no idea what musical mayhem lay in store. Canada's Singing Fools (who actually debuted with the shortlived moniker "The Fuckin'Screemz" until A&M Records of Canada wunderkind prez Gianncarlo Copprophagiao insisted they 'dumb it down')took the embryonic "Can-con"-dominated music scene by firestorm, igniting first the campus radio airwaves and eventually the pro-Soviet CBC radio latenight playlists with their unique brand of irreverent ditty-making and social comment you can tap your foot to. This revamped "ska"-flavoured dance dirge featured lead vocalist Glebe "Hiram" Walker at his most outrageous, belting out incendiary pleas to the docile yout' of his era to "kick the walls of Babylon down" ! Also showcased are the little known strains of Ramone Alpert, lesser light and l'il bro to A&M Records superhoncho, Herbie who was so taken when he heard "Babylon Breakdown" played to him for the first time over the frail Canada-U.S. long distance lines that he is said to have joined in on flugelhorn! This is yet another precious "time capsule" from a long gone epoch in "indie" recording before balding sycophants from the U.K. started shaving their heads and reading Raymond Chandler novels just to be hip.
