About this series:
Meet our neighbors under the surface of Pacific Northwest waters! See surprising colors, contrasts, cold water creatures that look like they came from outerspace. These submarine neighbors are part of the same ecosystem we are -- we all share the same fate. Each half-hour episode contains several short videos about the underwater world from a wide variety of perspectives: art, science, poetry, etc.

There’s a variety of things we can do to look after our oceans. In the long run, they depend on two things: a good understanding of how our oceans work, and engaging tomorrow’s decision makers in caring for our waters and their inhabitants. Our first video shows how a Marine Science teacher tackles both of these challenges. His students have built devices that can see and propel themselves underwater. These are called Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). In our second video, we’ll see how scientists use similar but larger ROVs to learn about creatures that live more than a mile below the ocean’s surface in our National Marine Sanctuaries.
