Kirby was named after John Kirby, the American lawyer who successfully defended a young Nintendo company in the landmark legal case Universal City Studios, Inc. vs. Nintendo Co., Ltd. when Nintendo was sued over the similarity of Donkey Kong to Universal's King Kong.
