John Kavanaugh joins us again for this week’s fly tying video and twists up the Last Chance Cornuta Cripple. This is fly is John's take on Rene Harrop's deadly Western pattern. It has been adapted for an East Coast hatch, the Cornuta or Large Blue Winged Olive. Sometimes emerging insects get stuck in their shuck and cannot emerge. This leaves them in a Very vulnerable state (crippled) and makes them an attractive meal to a waiting Trout. This pattern really matches the profile of a crippled Mayfly beautifully. Even if you do not see any real concentration of crippled bugs on the water, this fly will work. It is one of our go to patterns to fool extra picky Trout. I tye this in a #20-24 (without the rib and a duller thorax) to match the TINY winter Olives on small local limestone creeks. These wild fish are SUPER SPOOKY and tough customers any day of the year, forget about the January days when your profile sticks out like a whore in church against a field of snow. This fly always gets the job done. For this week’s Fly Tying Video we are super fortunate to have our good friend John Kavanaugh. John joins the podcast with his Saltwater Fly Pattern the H.T.A. or Hy Tye Anchovy. This is a FANTASTIC fly pattern that was developed to imitate an Anchovy. This is a huge forage off the North East and Mid Atlantic coasts for the False Albacore. Damn near every False Albacore I have ever boated was fooled by the Hy Tye Anchovy. John really nailed this one. It is cheap, easy, indestructible, and a dead nuts match to the little anchovies that Albacore love to tear up. It is our Go To pattern and it ALWAYS brings Albert to the boat. With False Albacore fly fishing just around the corner, you better get on it and twist some of these bad boys up. This week Jeff Blood ties up the Blood Dot. This is hands down, the best egg pattern out there. This is a great fly in the fall and spring when eggs are in the drift and a readily available food source. These are also highly productive candy flies or attractor patterns in your nymph rigs. There are a few elements built in to the design of this fly that make it work. The first is translucency. Get the fly wet and watch the way light passes through it. They glow just like a real egg does. The second element that makes this fly work is the way it absorbs water. I am mad about this fly. When I say that I mean I am ANGRY! Eric Stroup has once again NAILED a super simple and effective guide style fly pattern. Why did I not think of this?!!! Damn my square head and ham fists! Anyway, Eric has come up with a fantastic BWO Nymph pattern that uses all of 4 materials that you already own. This is a fly that you can tie in three minutes and it crushes the fishes. The Jbug can be tied all big style to represent the early spring olives, or you can tie it in the 20's for the little buggers in the autumn. It even has a split color difference between the top and bottom of the abdomen. I thought that Pheasant Tail Fibers had been used in every possible way. Damn you. I am super excited to have Mike Schmidt on the podcast! Mike is a hell of a fly tyer, and he kind of specializes in streamers. I am talking about the really big stuff you throw for huge fish. This is an articulate streamer about 5 inches long. Mike designed it to be light enough to cast with a fast action 5 weight, but heavy enough to get down. It looks like a small Chub or Brown Trout and has 2 hooks. One hook is up, and the other one is down. This means that if a big Trout short strikes, it still will get stuck. This winter I have been dredging my streamers with a Rio Fast sink - 5.6 ips Versileader. I am talking low and slow style and catching more big Trout than I thought possible in 31 degree water with big streamers. In 2009 we had all the water in the world. The East Coast also enjoyed nice cool weather all summer long. There were a mere 5 days in 2009 that the water was too warm to fish for Trout. 2010 was a way different story. We started out with high muddy rivers, and ended up with super heated trickles. This made for a tough season. I was done guiding for Trout in June, and the filming options went out the window. We couldn’t even drive 3 or 4 hours to find water to film on! Anyway, the Trout made it through the old drought and sauna gag. When I am guiding or fishing, I always carry the camera to shoot video of my friends and clients. This is a collection of shorts; we are all having a good time and catching some Trout. Well, it had to happen. Last summer we had COOL weather and LOTS of rain and the Trout fishing was EPIC. This year we have NO water and it is HOT as hell so the Trout game is OVER for now. I'm not crying because this gave me the excuse to put down the 4 and 5 wt rods and pick up the 6 and 8 wts. I'm talking about CARP people. The only fish so bad ass it has a MUSTACHE. If Carp drank, they would drink Whiskey right from the bottle and make out with your MOM. They would listen to Motorhead and drive primer grey CAMAROS...I digress. NY has some, so does NJ. Good thing I have a place in both places. There are also CARP by both places in both places. Works out great if you aren't a mustache. Which I am not. For this week’s Fly Tying Video, our good friend Eric Stroup returns to twist up the goods. Stroup’s Sulphur Nymph is definitely my weapon of choice to match these Mayflies subsurface. I have been privy to the previous two (very effective) incarnations of this fly. The addition of the brown Thin Skin really makes this look like a Sulphur Nymph that is ready to emerge. I also like really the 50/50 proportions that Eric Ties this bug in. My advice is to tie these up and put them in the rig that I show in Episode #21. For this week’s Fly Tying Video, John Collins ties up a great Steelhead pattern. This one is called J.C.’S Electric Steelhead Stonefly. Steelhead like crazy colored flies. This one fits the bill because it is Pink and Chartreuse (a color combo that has ALWAYS worked for us.) You are going to tie this on a super stout hook. A strong hook is maybe the most important piece of gear if you are going after Steelhead. Always tie on 2x or 3x heavy hooks because if you don’t, you will get back a straightened hook. I just tied up some Electric Caddis with John the other day. It is super easy getting the wire in to the tubing when you spin the tubing and hold the wire still. Work on this in ½ inch increments with 6-8 inches of tubing and wire. It seems that the Striped Bass coming south like to stop and eat the sand eels around Island Beach State Park. This always starts a week or so before Thanksgiving, and goes on well after the boats are taken out for the winter. For this week’s Fly Tying Video we filmed Jay “Fishy” Fullum at the 19th International Fly Tying Symposium in Somerset NJ. Fishy is well known for his creative flies and his equally inventive choice of materials. The Wire Tail is no exception. This is a fantastically simple and durable pattern that is accessible to any level of fly tier. In the true spirit of a Fishy Fly, he leaves the wing and head unfinished in the video. The finishing and true final character of the fly is left up to the tier. For this week’s Fly Tying Video John Collins twists up JC's Copperhead. This is a great variation of the venerable Wooly Bugger. John has used some really interesting materials in this fly, building in some fantastic strike triggering properties and added durability. Instead of chenille for the body, John uses peacock herl, which is ALWAYS a good idea. For the tail he uses Fin Raccoon instead of marabou. It pulses in the water the same as marabou, but it is way stronger and more resistant to sharp teeth. The Copperhead also has Dry Fly hackle replacing saddle for a little extra glow. This fly will definitely out-fish your average Wooly Bugger. John ties the Copperhead in a huge range of sizes fro #16 to #4. For this weeks Fly Tying Video John Collins Ties the Claret Wulff. This is a great pattern for any piece of water that has a Slate Drake/Isonychia hatch. I am a big fan of the Wulff style flies. They are easy to see and float like a cork. Whenever I am throwing dries at risers, I always try to gain as many advantages as I can. One component of my strategy is to target rising Trout in broken water and glides. First, this makes it harder for the Trout to see you or any mistakes you may make. The second advantage is that the Trout has less time to scrutinize your fly and presentation. The Wulff Style fly is ideally suited for this exact situation. I am always shocked at how many times a Trout I am unaware of will slash at my fly, above or below the Trout I am targeting. These are also fantastic for a dry dropper set up. The extra buoyancy will let you get away with a larger or heavier nymph without sinking the top fly. For this weeks fly Tying Video John Collins brings you another original pattern. J.C.’S Iso PT is a fantastic pattern that has put more than a few PA Trout in my net this year. As the name states, this is a variation of a Pheasant Tail nymph that imitates an Isonychia Nymph. These nymphs are an important food source for Trout on the East Coast. They are active late spring all the way through the summer. Isonychia Nymphs are super fast swimmers so do not be afraid to let these puppies swing, or let them rise up at the end of your drift. Many days a little action on these bad boys is the key to getting the fish to slam your fly. For this weeks Fly Tying video, John Collins gives us an Eastern take, on a Western staple. The Amber Stimulator imitates an Egg Laying Stonefly, but in a size and shade more appropriate for Eastern Streams. For the East use a Dai Riki 270 #12 thru #16, for the West tie this in the #6 range and in the appropriate colors. For Eastern streams and rivers this is a fantastic pattern to fish at dusk and in to the dark. Remember to try some action on this fly. Egg Laying Stoneflies land and take off many times in this process, making a commotion on the water. For this weeks fly fishing video we have some footage from the Catskills that we shot a few weeks back. Joey “the arm” Gilbo and I went to fish with our good friend John Kavanaugh for three days. The rivers were at perfect levels for the drift boat, and the bugs were cooperative to the point of the fish almost not feeding because they were full! This may be the most fun I have ever had on a fishing trip. At several points we laughed so hard that it hurt. When I sat down to edit this video, I decided to just show how much fun you can have fly fishing with your friends and leave out all the technical stuff. For this weeks fly tying video we have the final installment of our wing shooting/fly tying segments with guest tyer Walt Young. This time Walt twists up a fantastic variation of the Pheasant Tail Nymph. The main differences between the modern PT Nymph and the one Walt ties, are the omission of copper wire ribbing on the abdomen, and the substitution of dubbing instead of peacock herl on the thorax. For this weeks Fly Tying Video we visit with the creator of Walts worm, Mr. Walt Young. In our last segment we harvested some Pheasants for fly tying materials. So, we figured it might be a good idea to tie a few flies with those materials. This one is called the Hen Pheasant Soft-Hackle. I fished it as a Hendrickson Emerger last week and it killed! The really cool thing about this fly is that we use a hen neck/head feather instead of partridge for the Hackle. You can find allot more useable smaller size feathers off the hen Pheasant than you can with the Partridge. I had no idea you could substitute hen for partridge. We are big fans of swinging soft-hackles in the spring when trout are eating emergers. This is one of our favorite searching patterns when covering allot of water before the hatch starts. In this months fly fishing video we have two Saltwater segments filmed with my good friend Capt. Al Zalata from www.a2zfish.com filmed in Barnegat Bay NJ. The first segment is from June when the Big Gator Bluefish were in the bay. Blues get a bad rep as a trash fish, but we love to catch them. The second segment is from a few days ago when the fist fish of the fall Striped Bass run showed up. This means great Striper fishing for the next month or two.
