Given the religious composition of my own matrilineal heritage I'll probably spend not a second less than eternity in hell for completely ignoring the fact that Italians started calling the Virgin Mary, a.k.a. the mother of God, ma donna - "my lady," or something thereabout - like 400 years ago. When I did my Madonna search just now, it took a good, long while before I happened upon the Virgin Mary.
