Niabi Zoo in Coal Valley greeted their newest resident on Saturday April 10, 2010 when a female baby giraffe was born. The new giraffe weighs an estimated 150 pounds and is 5'3". Her parents are mom Twiga and father Kenya. Niabi also has Mimi and her baby Kito, who is male, and was born in late December. Kito and the new baby are half-siblings. On Saturday night, zoo staff members were monitoring Twiga using a Web cam, because they knew she would give birth soon. Once the baby was born, a group of Niabi employees and the zoo's veterinarians went to the exhibit. The camera captured the birth on film. There is a public naming contest for the new baby. To enter, e-mail a name to ask@niabizoo.com, or mail it to the zoo, through May 20. The following weekend, the winner will be announced.
