The song and video were the brainchild of writer and producer Joe Klein, who wrote the song in the summer of 1988 and recorded it a few months later with a couple of surfers he found hanging out on the beach. Christmas In Malibu premiered on KIIS-FM in Los Angeles just after Thanksgiving and quickly got added to hundreds of other radio stations nationwide. The music video was shot in Malbiu in a single day early in December of 1988 and rushed off to MTV and several other national video channels and shows. Most of them aired the video during the holidays that year and for a few years after. A cassette of the song was available in stores as a limited release in 1988 and 1989. After "fading out" and being mostly forgotten for over a decade, Christmas In Malibu resurfaced last year on the Podsafe Music Network.
