If you wanted to know a little more about how Aussie developers Nnooo managed to become the only self-published Australian developer creating games for Vita, here's your chance. We caught up with Nic and Bruce from Nnooo late last year at GCAP, and chatted all about the company's three major games: Pop, Spirit Hunters, Inc and - of course - escapeVektor. At the time, the company had only just started chatting to Sony about the development deal, instead seeming to pin their hopes on the 3DS version of escapeVektor which was also announced this week. As you may have seen, GamePron is getting a little bit excited about Battlefield 3. We’ve checked out the multiplayer, a little single-player, and over the weekend had the chance to catch up with Creative Director at DICE, the Lead Designer of Battlefield 3, Lars Gustavsson. Crabitron, if you’ll forgive the pun, is a game that really grabs you. It’s an iPad-exclusive title with a truly unique gameplay mechanic, currently in development at Australian studio Two Lives Left. Every year, E3 tends to focus primarily on software - but every year there's a whole bunch of cool hardware on show as well. Epic Games Vice President Jay Wilbur can talk. We caught up at E3 to find out what was new and exciting since we saw him last. While we touched briefly on Gears of War 3 (one of the gems of the Microsoft press event), most of our chat actually focussed on the other cool stuff happening around the E3 show floor – including both of the new consoles revealed over the week. We were fresh from a behind-closed-doors demonstration of the game, and still a bit starry-eyed, but we managed to grab Brian Martel for a quick chat. He’s a co-founder of Gearbox and self-confessed “art czar” at the company, and – unashamedly – a massive Aliens fan. With an open-world map more than five times bigger than its predecessor, Arkham City has plenty of room to move, and more than enough locations for villains and baddies to hide. Various parts of the city have been taken over by individual villains, and the art team has – literally – gone to town making sure that each turf zone is distinct from the last. We’re excited to see the new-look Penguin’s personal taste in homewares. At last year’s E3, French company Parrot revealed its AR.Drone. It’s a flying machine – a quadricopter – and instead of a traditional radio control unit, you can pilot the aircraft using your mobile phone. We got our grubby paws on Sony‘s new PlayStation Vita at E3, and checked out a couple of games designed for the platform- the first one is shiny, new, and full of potential. It’s called Reality Fighter, and before we took a look at it, we didn’t know quite what to expect. Fortunately, John McLaughlin from Xdev Studio was there to help us out, and explain just how Reality Fighter isn’t just your usual brawler. As happy as Human Head co-founder Chris Rhinehart is to give snappy single-sentence answers, he’s also more than happy to go into great detail, elaborating on details like the game’s lighting, the aesthetics and the storyline, but also giving us all the gossip on the game’s new weapons and just how it’s making use of that modified version of the idTech 4 engine. I don’t like to play favourites, but I’m going to lay my cards on the table, right here. Whenever anybody has asked me for my “highlight of E3″, Other Ocean‘s interpretation of The War of the Worlds has come out on the top of the list. This new Driver is the sixth in the series, but follows directly on from events in Driv3r, released in 2004. Detective John Tanner has suffered an accident and is left in a coma, and the game is set inside his unconscious dream-state. Jean-Sébastien Décant is Senior Designer on San Francisco, while Marie-Jo Leroux is the game’s Producer. Since launching in March 2011, Rift has seen a major update every month, each one bringing a handful of new bits and pieces to the MMORPG. Developer Trion Worlds was at E3, showing off what’s in store with the upcoming 1.3 update, subtitled Waves of Madness. Not only did we get a quick chat with Adam Gershowitz, producer on Rift, but he took us on a guided tour of the new 1.3 content, which takes place inside Hammerknell, the abandoned Dwarven city. That’s where Akylios (the Dragon of the plane of water) has been imprisoned for as long as we can remember, but now, the Abyssal Cult has breached the ancient stronghold. Wherever there are video games, you’ll find Nvidia lurking nearby. The hardware company has created some of the world’s most shiny technology, tucked away inside GPUs, video cards and motherboards (not to mention the PS3 console). The way it's meant to be played It’s no surprise, then, that Nvidia had quite a hefty presence at this year’s E3. Gaming technology is being used for all sorts of non-gaming purposes, these days. We’ve seen touch-screens used for cookbooks, motion-sensing controllers implemented into medical applications, and consoles used as super-computers. What we haven’t seen so much of, however, is technology going the other way. Forth Dimension Displays are looking to buck that trend. The British company is the world’s leading supplier of very high-res near-to-eye (NTE) microdisplays, which are predominantly used in things like neurosurgical microscopes and other super-high-tech medical gadgets, as well as in the military training environment. The RTS world hasn’t really been properly rocked in a while, but Petroglyph Games and Trion Worlds are looking to change all of that with the upcoming MMO End of Nations. The companies certainly bring the right sort of pedigree to the game – Petroglyph rose from the ashes of Westwood Games, creators of Command & Conquer. Trion, on the other hand, contains former developers from World of Warcraft, Aion and EverQuest. We spoke with Chris Lena, formerly Producer at EverQuest and Champions Online and currently Senior Producer on End of Nations, while we were at E3, and he filled us in a little on what’s in store with the game, designed to put the “massive” into real-time strategy. Microsoft chose to open this year’s pre-E3 media event with Modern Warfare 3 for a good reason. It looks shiny, plays well, and features a whole bunch of explosions. Mobile gaming wasn’t forgotten at this year’s E3. Even though most people seemed to be paying attention only to the big consoles, companies like Sony Ericsson were also on-site, showing off their latest wares, biggest titles and coolest games. We caught up with Dom Neil-Dwyer from Sony Ericsson at a celebration thrown by the hardware company, in recognition of the launch of the Xperia PLAY in the North American market (that’s the “PlayStation Phone” by the way), its continuing success overseas, and – of course – the announcement of more than 20 new games for the handset. The Sims 3: Pets is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. While everybody else was lining up for other, bigger games at the EA booth, I was checking out this new expansion pack for PC (stand-alone game for PS3, Xbox 360 and 3DS), which brings a whole new element to the franchise – animals! According to Pets producer Michael Cox, The Sims franchise is a victim of its own success. One of the big surprises from this year’s E3 expo appeared out of nowhere at Ubisoft‘s pre-Expo conference on Monday. Somehow, the guys at Ubisoft Montreal have managed to keep Far Cry 3 tightly under wraps, which meant our first glimpse at the game was something very beautiful, very intense, and very, very Far Cry. With a 90 minute timeslot in the glorious Orpheum Theater, EA took a slightly different approach to the annual E3 media briefing. The company took to the stage and showed off nine games – including a new announcement – with some revelations that made gamers very happy. This year, Microsoft started the pre-E3 festivities off with a bang, a gameplay demo of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The excitement didn’t stop there, with sneaky peeks at Tomb Raider, the Kinect-enabled Mass Effect 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, and an assortment of EA Sports titles. Microsoft confirmed some of the new partnerships that Xbox has forged – soon you’ll be able to watch live TV from your gaming console. Sony‘s pre-E3 conference started off on the right note, with President Jack Tretton apologising to gamers and fans for “the elephant in the room”. By addressing that bit bright and early, the stage was set for the NGP to finally be revealed properly. The codename was lifted, the lights dimmed and Kazuo Hirai officially named the PlayStation Vita as the follow-up to the PSP. Sony also showed off new bits and pieces for both Uncharted 3 and BioShock Infinite for PS3, but – somewhat predictably – all eyes were on the new handheld. Coming in the next year or so is a new action RPG called Ruin, as well as a collection of PS3 favourites making the leap to the Vita. The Electronic Entertainment Expo - or E3 - is the biggest week in the gaming calendar. In fact, there's so much stuff that goes on that it can't all be crammed into two and a half days, and we take a moment to recap some of the big reveals that have already happened in the weeks leading up to the event.
