What Do Mushrooms Eat…and Drink? A mushroom is a fungus that can grow almost anywhere. Some mushroom species only grow on certain trees, some grow on logs, Some in decomposing leaves or in compost. Temperature and moisture levels must be perfect for mushrooms to form. So look for them 7 to 10 days after a good rainfall! So just how does a mushroom eat? Well, a mushroom looks like a plant, doesn’t it? And plants perform photosynthesis using water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight to make simple sugars which gives plants energy to grow. But since a mushroom is not a plant, it must find its own food! A mushroom is a fungus. Actually more closely related to an animal than a plant. Unlike animals, fungi can’t run or walk or search for food, can they? Down below the soil or the mulch is the mushroom’s body called the mycelium. This mycelium is made of a web of tiny thread-like strands called hyphae. These webs secrete acids and enzymes to absorb nutrients from dead leaves, rotting trees, and other dead plant matter. The webs can be very tiny or they can stretch for hundreds of feet under the ground…unseen by humans! So, mushrooms are very busy “recycling factories” for dead plants, leaves, and trees. And the mushroom cap that you see above the ground is actually the fruit of the fungus! There are almost as many species of primates as there are days in the year. And each species of primate is unique and special. They range in size from the tiny pygmy mouse lemur that weighs about an ounce to the gorilla weighing up to 600 pounds!Each of the IPPL member organizations devote themselves to conservation and protection of primate species native to their area, or to primates imported into their area that need sanctuary. Dr. Shirley McGreal devotes her sanctuary in South Carolina to the rescue and care of the smallest of the ape family, the gibbon, the acrobats of the southeast Asian forests.Caring about and respecting wildlife is the right thing to do. We’re grateful to people like Dr. McGreal who have kept their promise to the primates. The solution to threatened and endangered species seems simple: Let primates remain in their natural habitat where they can happily sing, swing, forage for food, and raise their young. Every day Americans buy 62 million newspapers and throw away 44 million of them. That’s like dumping hallf a million trees into a landfill every week! The trees that were chopped down to make new paper can no longer make oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, or provide a habitat for thousands of species. Every month Americans throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill a giant skyscraper! All this glass is recyclable! All this glass takes up space in landfills. And this glass will take 4,000 years or more to decompose!Every year more than 100 million cell phones and millions of personal computers are tossed out in the United States. Because these products contain lead, and other hazardous materials, this trash leaks into our environment and threatens human and animal health.What did you throw out today? A water bottle?
