Nazis Not Welcome Rally / Unite Against Racism!Portland, OregonOctober 6th, 2007In response to a three day gathering of white supremacists in the Portland area, community members and anti-racists gathered at Lents Park in S.E. Portland, Oregon to voice their opposition to racism and fascism.This event, attended by about 150 people, was moderated by Peter Little of the Ad Hoc, Committee Against Racism and Fascism, which called the Rally in opposition to the “Hammerfest,” a three day event to be taking place at a hotel in Sherwood, Oregon.Founded this September, the Ad-Hoc Committee is dedicated to monitoring and opposing white supremacist groupings in Portland and beyond. As large neo-Nazi rallies have often been preceded by attacks on Jewish people and people of color, sexual minorities, as well as activists, the Ad-Hoc Committee wishes to work with community groups and people of good conscience who want to respond to fascist mobilization. “If we come together, the bigots don’t stand a chance,” says one committee member, “This rally is only a beginning.”Peter spoke about Portland's racist past and the people’s struggle to protect themselves from racism. He states that racism takes many faces, is not only the obvious skinheads and neo nazi types, but also, among others, anti-immigration organizations.This is an ongoing theme throughout the Demonstration- that racism is insidious and is hidden all around us.Peter introduced speakers with experience from many different fronts of the ongoing threats from and struggle against racism.First to speak was Walidah Imarisha, a spoken word war-rior woman who fights the power with protest poetry. She speaks eloquently about how these groups have co-opted the language of the left, often sounding like environmentalists and other progressive groups. Hood Travel Plan Must Address Roads:The current Travel Plan proposal introduced by the Forest Service in May is to create six new Off-Highway Vehicle play areas around the mountain, totaling over 50,000 acres. This would render OHV use in all other areas of the forest illegal, an improvement over the current situation, in which OHV use is legal in all areas unless specifically prohibited. However, the current proposal falls short for three reasons:1) The Forest Service is sacrificing far too much of the forest to an activity that is incompatible with other uses. Other recreationists, not to mention wildlife, don’t want to use areas surrounded by noisy OHVs. And since only about 1% of the demand on Mt. Hood is from OHV users, why are they getting 5% of the forest?2) Without law enforcement, the system won’t work. Mt. Hood has only five law enforcement officers for its 1.1 million acres.3) The Forest Service proposal ignores the fastest growing problem in the forest: thousands of miles of old logging roads are fragmenting wildlife habitat, eroding into streams, and need to be obliterated. "This ruling sends a really clear signal to the Forest Service. The continued logging of old growth is unacceptable, period. The public has demonstrated they don't want it. The science doesn't even justify it.''Located in the Cascade Range outside Portland, Mount Hood is popular with skiers, mountain climbers and hikers, and gets more than 4 million recreational visitors a year, more than any other national forest in Oregon.It was once one of the most heavily logged of the national forests in Oregon, but former timber towns that now rely on tourism and recreation for their economies have thrown their support behind legislation pending in Congress to create nearly 130,000 acres of new wilderness areas where logging would be off-limits.In a ruling dated Saturday, U.S. District Judge Michael Mosman in Portland found the U.S. Forest Service was arbitrary and capricious when it failed to monitor the impact logging would have on pine marten, pileated woodpeckers, deer and elk, as required under the National Forest Management Act.Those species were designated by the Forest Service as indicators of the health of old growth forest ecosystems.The Forest Service had argued that under formal forest management plans and 2005 Bush administration revisions to forest management rules, it was not required to monitor wildlife. But the judge found that rules imposed in 2000, which called for using the best available science, applied to the project.Originally proposed in 1998, the Slinky timber sale called for effectively clearcutting 184 acres of scattered patches of old growth in the headwaters of the Clackamas River, which has been heavily logged. In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) ruled to allow further media consolidation, defying overwhelming public opposition. This means that one big media company can own all the newspapers, radio and TV stations in one community, controlling all the news, media, entertainment and it's content. Hearings were held in different regions with short notice. The one in Seattle on November 9th, 2007, was set up with only 5 days notice. Still, over 1000 people attended. Road from Ar Ramadi: The Private Rebellion of Staff Sergeant MejíaOn June 22, 2007, Camilo Mejia, the first Conscientious Objector to walk off the front lines in Iraq spoke at the First Unitarian Church in Portland Oregon.On May 21, 2004, a U.S. military court sentenced Staff Sergeant Camilo Mejia Castillo of the Florida National Guard to the maximum penalty of one year's imprisonment for desertion. He had refused to return to his unit in Iraq, citing moral reasons, the legality of the war and the conduct of US troops towards Iraqi civilians and prisoners.Amnesty International considers him to be a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned for his conscientious opposition to participating in war.After a few brief introductory comments, Camilo Mejia read excerpts from his brand new book, "Road From Ar Ramadi".Camilo joined the service at age 19, served as an infantryman for 8 years, was a staff sergeant and squad leader. "I had done the training and had the knowledge and the expertise to do my job in Iraq." Though trained to kill and ignore the collateral damage of civilian casualties, he says that "there's no training to prepare one for that type of experience." Lynne Stewart: My Fight for Justice in "Patriot Act" USAwww.lynnestewart.org Introduction by Ashlee Albies, chair, Portland National Lawyers Guild www.portlandnlg.org Radical human rights attorney Lynne Stewart is acclaimed for defending poor people, radicals of color and controversial figures. Because of this she has been falsely accused of helping terrorists. Now convicted, she recently received a 28 month sentence, but is free on bail pending appeal. On Tuesday, April 9, 2002, she was arrested and agents searched her Manhattan office for documents. She was arraigned before Manhattan federal Judge John Koeltl. This is an obvious attempt by the U.S. government to silence dissent, curtail vigorous defense lawyers, and install fear in those who would fight against the U.S. government's racism, seek to help Arabs and Muslims being prosecuted for free speech and defend the rights of all oppressed people. Lynne Stewart was in Portland, March 6, 2007, at Portland State University, as part of a West coast fund raising tour. She spoke for about 45 minutes, in part about her case, but much, much more. As she says at the outset, "this really isn't about the case and me, as much as it is about lawyering and what has become of lawyering over the past five years......my perception about this is....that we have seen a freezing of the playing field upon which lawyers operate. And this has to do of course with the sense that we have of who controls the court." She continues speaking about her case, but mostly as an example of government overreaching and its attempts to instill fear in the community of lawyers who defend American citizens. Her trial was a horrendous mockery, being held a few blocks from Ground Zero in New Your City, before a jury of local citizens, "who each had their own 911 story to tell." And at one point in this trial a large photograph of Osama Ben Laden was introduced to the jury. The judge permitted this. After much commentary on the Bush Administration and analysis of what is going on, she gives some sound advice to those in the audience: "...educate our fellow Americans to connect the dots, to see the Imperial design..." "...agitate, agitate, resist, resist. The rule requires all national forests to designate those roads, trails, and areas that are open to motor vehicle use including Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs)." "Mt. Hood National Forest was the first forest in the Pacific Northwest to begin Travel Planning. Most forests that have already begun Travel Planning are in the Southwest US and are focusing all of their energy on controlling devastating OHV use. In the Pacific Northwest OHVs are a big problem, but pale in comparison to the damage being done by a crumbling road network." "The Forest Service's own 2003 Roads Analysis states that nearly half (49%) of the roads in Mt. Hood National Forest are unnecessary. There are over 4,000 miles of roads in the forest, most of which were built for the purpose of logging in our watersheds. Many of these roads are deteriorating, posing additional threats to fish, wildlife, and the drinking water of over a million Oregon residents. Time and time again the Forest Service has said that it has too many forest roads to maintain properly, and that the consequences are impacting drinking water and wildlife habitat. Annie's Cabin timber sale, a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposal to thin 566-acres within the Molalla River Recreation Corridor, contract has been rewarded to Freres Lumber Company. This timber sale would severely impact recreational trails designated for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding created by volunteers. Sensitive species such as Oregon Slender Salamanders, Red Tree Voles, and Tall Bughane have been found within this timber sale project and would also be impacted. Act now to contact Congresswoman Darlene Hooley to tell her office to urge the BLM to cancel this timber sale. History of Trail System16 of the 25 units of the Annie's Cabin timber sale either have the Molalla River Recreation Corridor's Shared-Use Trail System running through units or abutting the units with no buffers. This trail system was created in the 1990s when the BLM closed 13 miles of logging roads converting these roads into trails for hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian uses. In 1994, the BLM approved the development of 12 miles of additional single-track trails in partnership with volunteer organizations. Thinning of Unit #2 would impact Amanda's Trail, Mark's Trail, and Sandquist's Trail, three trails named for early advocates and builders of the trail system. We need to protect and preserve the scenic beauty of these trails that volunteers spent long hours to create and maintain!Story of AnnieThe timber sale name, Annie's Cabin, comes from a cabin that sits just north of Squirrel Creek on the east side of the Huckleberry Trail. Jim Williams, Annie Miller, and her daughter, Squirrel, used this cabin as their living room (a small trailer was next door) from June 1992 until December 1993. They were BLM volunteers who worked to improve the condition of the Molalla River Recreation Corridor. Jim's presence made a big difference in the Molalla River Recreation Corridor. He loved this area and worked hard to improve and protect it. Jim spent his last days there and died in October 1993. Annie and Squirrel left two months later. The cabin sits just 250 feet south of Unit #6 of the timber sale. We need to continue to protect Jim's vision!Oregon Slender SalamandersVolunteers in Bark have found Oregon Slender Salamanders, a State and Federal 'sensitive listed species, in Units 9 and 13. The BLM provides no plans in the Environmental Assessment and Decision Rationale on a way to protect this species from the logging operations. Oregon Slender Salamanders need dense canopy and course woody debris over 20 inches in diameter to survive in the forest. Logging operations on the ground and opening of canopy will very likely disturb this creature's habitat. According to the BLM's Decision Rationale, the agency also found this species in Unit 6, 16, 17, and 18. We need to get protection buffers placed on these Oregon Slender Salamanders!Wildlife NestsThe BLM has removed 30 acres from Units 8, 9, 11, and 12 from the timber sale due to the discovery of red tree voles. A Survey & Manage listed species, red tree voles live in the canopies of old growth Douglas Fir trees and provide 50% of the diet of Northern Spotted Owls. We need an open process by the BLM for the public to comment on these red tree vole findings as well as information regarding the species living in 50 nests of trees within the timber sale found by Bark volunteers!Steelhead and Chinook SalmonThe BLM did not address the cumulative effects by this timber sale, the surrounding lands, and future projects impacting Steelhead and Chinook Salmon that read and spawn along the Molalla River watershed. A creek just north of Unit #13 does not have the sixty foot buffer as required by the agency for perennial streams. Bark Hike Leader: Gradey Proctor Bark-About to Gordon Creek Saturday, February 10th www.bark-out.org February's Bark-About will be a visit to the Gordon Creek Timber Sale, led by long-time Barker, Gradey Proctor. This proposal is located near the Bull Run Watershed and is currently home to a diverse and integral forest. The Gordon Creek Timber Sale is proposed in public forests administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The Gordon Creek sale will log a mix of young and old-growth forest. Defenseless Iraqi men, women and children have been caught in currents of Empire, greed, hate and revenge far beyond their ability to understand or, unfortunately, escape.We have unleashed a firestorm in a country whose demographic landscape is prone to sectarian violence. This apparently was not considered when the lies were told which seduced us into accepting this atrocity.We need these reminders. We need to remember those who have died, even if they may be nameless and faceless half way around the other side of the globe.Our Democracy, we the people, have permitted this war; we have funded and justified an occupation both heartless and heartbreaking. Our taxes supply the weapons doing so much of the killing on both sides, and in many other conflicts around the world. As a nation, we cannot hide behind the fact that the majority of Iraqi deaths are at the hands of their own people, of their own religion. A bloody drama has been set in motion in Iraq, a drama which consumes both them and us, and which offers no way out.This day, perhaps laying down in solidarity with the dead can in some small way resurrect the heart of a nation. Today, March 30, 2007, members of the Portland Community opposing the war in Iraq protested the military recruiters office on NE Broadway. When I arrived, there were about 20 people present and three elders in rocking chairs blocking the doorways, refusing entry at one point to an 18 years old who had an appointment inside.The young man was affable and not at all enraged or indignant about being refused admittance, though the same could not be said for Officer Schaffer who verbally engaged the protesters for several minutes before pushing elders aside to gain entry both in and out of the offices.This officer, though short of abusive, insisted repeatedly that the young man had the Constitutional right to make the choice to enter the building and serve his country. Though the officer was able to physically push his way past the Grannie blockade, the young man showed much more respect and consideration for those who were trying to save his life, or protect him from contributing to the massive war crimes being committed daily in Iraq.On hand was Col. Ann Wright (ret.) a 29 year Army veteran and diplomat who resigned in opposition to the invasion of Iraq, local members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Pace, Chapter 72, Code Pink for Peace, and Portland Peaceful Response Coalition. Ann Wright was an inspirational speaker who engaged the crowd a couple of times, offering her perspective and her experiences with the resistance to the war taking place in Washington D.C.The 13 1/2 minute video includes a 5 minute or so interview with her as well as footage of the arrests. Two officers eventually appeared and queried the grannies blocking the door if they intended to get arrested. They replied that they would not remove their rocking chairs from the doorways. The officers left, but returned with reinforcements, who arrested the elders seated in their rocking chairs, cuffed them and escorted them to the car, amidst cheers and refrains from, "we shall overcome."Another small group of protesters entered the building from a side doors, which quickly brought officers to that part of the building. Two or three of this number exited the building, while one woman was arrested and escorted to jail.I think the total was five arrests. I don't know the count, but during the three month campaign, scores of elders have been arrested, and insist that these weekly blockades will continue until the Occupation is ended.This, as with the weekly www.defundthewar.com campaign at the offices of Oregon Sen. Omoyele Sowore is a Nigerian Oil activist traveling through the United States educating people about tragic conditions in his country caused by our planetary addiction to petroleum. He spoke of the pollution of the Niger delta in Africa, of torture, of rampant and escalating poverty in a country producing 2.5 million barrels of oil a day, 25% of which goes to the United States. Niger is the 6th largest producer of oil in the world. Omoyele tells the story of the ongoing destruction of the Niger Delta, not as a series of statistics, but as how it affected him growing up, affected his education and finally forced him to abandon his country in order to carry a message few people in the developed countries really want to hear or seriously consider. "The Public Square is the Heart of the Community" Mark Lakeman, Co-Director of the non-profit City Repair Project, speaks at Washington State University/Vancouver. Mission: "The City Repair Project is an organized group action that educates and inspires communities and individuals to creatively transform the places where they live." "We facilitate artistic and ecologically-oriented placemaking through projects that honor the interconnection of human communities and the natural world." Why City Repair? In 1785, the Continental Congress passed the National Land Ordinance, which laid a Roman colonial grid over all lands west of the Ohio River. This included all future cities and towns. Public spaces and piazzas occur naturally at the intersection of pathways when communities are allowed to grow organically. The National Land Ordinance both pre-empted the natural development of such places and neglected to provide for them within the mandated grid. In cities based on the grid plan, it is much easier for people to feel isolated and not know their own neighbors. The neighborhood places for communication and gathering that develop naturally in non-grid cities must be specifically planned for in grid cities. The City Repair Project was established to return these important places of communication and participation to our neighborhoods. At City Repair, we see that sustainable communities are built when people work together for mutual benefit. We create and facilitate prototype gathering spaces that can inspire any community to create their own places of gathering.
