I’m back in the UK now (bah) but my last house in Australia was in Highgate Hill, Brisbane. It was a big Queenslander with roaches and a good mix of house mates who passed like ships in the night but were all vaguely into punk and hardcore of some kind. In times gone by, I probably would have done some Aaron Cometbus inspired zine about the history of the house and all the kids who had lived there. But this is 2011 not 2003 and I’m a lot lazier than I used to be so instead I decided to make a podcast featuring sets chosen by each person who was living in the house at that time. This show is in two parts cos its really long. The first half (Podcast 25a) features a set of indie/garage/lo-fi tunes from Wex along with Kieran’s set of more straight up hardcore. Another month, another late show. This is starting to feel like doing a fanzine ha ha. Anyhow, this month, I’ve got a guest podcaster helping me out – Toby from A Load Of Stuff That Happened blog was kind enough to record a guest set for me. Ok! It’s August already. Time for a new show. This one features a guest set from my friends Ian and Debbie. We organised this over email, with them both sending me two songs each. It came out really well – not only is there a rad set of melodic punk, they’ve also picked a bunch of great bands I’d otherwise probably have never heard and I’m always stoked when people want to help out with the show. There’s another live set this month. This time out, it’s Chris Clavin, recorded playing live in Puerto Rico. If you haven’t heard Chris before, is in Ghost Mice and plays cool acoustic punk. This set forms a nice contrast to the set I played last month featuring some of the bands he’s played in like Devil Is Electric, Jammy Dodgers, Imperial Can and Operation Cliff Clavin. I think the recording totally captures the feeling of the show well, and I’m totally stoked I got to include this in the show. February was a manic month. I am ill and broken and poor. But it was all worth it. I made it back to Berlin and hung out with some great people, ate some great food, and saw the sights. February and it’s still fucking cold, although at least the snows gone and I finally got paid. January’s a long month innit. Anyhow, this show features the second of our studio live sets. This is October’s podcast and the second of three shows focusing on punk and hardcore from my home town of Southampton. This is an entire show of old Southampton bands from between 2000 – 2007 – basically from about the millennium to when I went travelling. I started off with the idea that I could do a kind of overview that would include all the great bands from this period but there were too many songs and too many people that needed to be included. So even though Ten Songs #11 is going to feature another short set of old Southampton HC, I couldn’t include everyone and everything. Sorry, it’s nothing personal. Oi oi, this is the first of two, possibly three shows focusing on punk and hardcore in my home city of Southampton. So I got a new microphone and a spit guard and everything got really painless. Wow. This is March's podcast and I hope you like it. Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format. I hope that makes sense! 2. I either asked the bands (PJ & Gabby, Kelly Kemp, El Morgan, Sam Russo, Uniform Choice, Parade Of Enemies, School Jerks) or the record label who put out the record I was playing (Recess, Deranged) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it.
