Every fall Common Cents organizes a Penny Harvest all over NYC and now in other cities. Students in public and private schools fan out going door-to-door to collect pennies. That small change makes big changes, because the Harvest is now close to a MILLION DOLLARS a year. That money then goes back to each school and, through student-run committees, is donated to worthy local groups. So young people learn first hand the power of community organizing and the power of the purse.
