PCM DS is a place to showcase class projects produced by students enrolled in Portland Community Media's Digital Storytelling Class. We never outgrow our need for stories and storytelling. In the digital age, with its emphasis on passive entertainment, many feel that modern society is losing the art of telling stories. Human beings have always told stories, and always used whatever technology was available – cave drawing, quill pen, printing press. This class utilizes the project-based learning model where students learn the process of digital storytelling though creating a project on their own.Project-based learning (PBL) is a model of learning that shifts away from the traditional practices of short, isolated, teacher-centered lessons and instead emphasizes learning that is long-term, interdisciplinary, student-centered, and integrated with real world issues and practices. Portland Community Media (PCM) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the production of local, non-commercial public access media—developed and produced in the community, by the community and for the community. PCM has served the citizens of Portland, Oregon for 25 years, providing training and tools for individuals and organizations to use cablecast and other media as a means of communication, civic involvement, artistic and cultural expression and community development. The Mission of Portland Community Media is to promote broad participation in civic and cultural life by encouraging effective use and understanding of community media. For more information check out our website
