Paul Levinson's June 2005 Keynote Address to the Media Ecology Association conference at Fordham University in New York City, about the origins and history of the First Amendment in the United States, and its current trampling by the Federal Communications Commission. John Hollwitz, VP for Academic Affairs at Fordham, introduces Dr. Levinson, who discusses Thomas Jefferson vs. John Adams on the First Amendment, the "clear and present danger" decision of 1919 which opened the door to the current disregard of the First Amendment, the "Seven Dirty Words" case in the 1970s, and other events which have lead to the record fines currently being levied by the FCC on broadcasters. 15 minutes of questions from the audience, and answers by Dr. Levinson, follow this 50-minute address.
