In the darkest deepest jungles of Borneo, I met a shaman of the headhunter Iban tribe. I handed him my camera, and through a translator, asked him to make my video footage look like cinematic film. I recently tried selling my old laptop on ebay and was victim of a common scam buyers use to take advantage of paypal policy. Ebay/Paypal are the same company. Paypal only recognise the address listed on the invoice, so if the buyer cancels payment after you have posted it, you have no protection. *Buyer claims they have not received the item. For big ticket items is is essential to have tracking id. This protects the seller from unscrupulous buyers who receive the item, but claim it never arrived. Personally, after my experience, I will never use either ebay or paypal for items over $100. The hill village of Dalat is a temperate tourist escape from the tropical heat of the rest of Vietnam. The most common tourist activity in Dalat is to take an Easy Rider guided motorcycle of the surrounding countryside. I take a tour and visit a silk worm farm, a waterfall, watch traditional weaving, and visit a rural blacksmith who offers me a homemade alcoholic brew made of rice and reptile animal parts! Organic farming is currently receiving a lot of attention. Many farmers are keen to give organics ago but are unsure about the process involved and it’s viability. A new video produced by Mark Shea of Overlander.tv, hopes to demystify organic farming by bringing together some of Australia’s top commercial organic and non-toxic farmers, and ask them how they manage their enterprises without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Mark joined a tour led by Nuffield Farming Scholar Don MacFarlane which took in ten different properties including the Victorian Agricultural Research Centre. The great thing about the video is that it allows the farmers involved to tell their own story on why they went organic, how they went about it and whether it has been a viable move. Between Darwin and Kakadu National Park is the Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge. They put on a great Aboriginal Culture Show of a night, around the camp fire, and of a morning introduce guests to bush tucker and natural medicines on a walking tour of the surrounding bushland. They also do a boat tour of the Mary River where you are almost guaranteed the chance to see crocodiles. To film in Kakadu National Park, one must pay for a permit. The management lob all commercial filming in the same basket. I donâ??t think this is terribly fair, or supportive of independent Aussie filmmakers. For self funded filmmakers, hoping to make commercially viable projects, surely National Parks could defer payment, or reduce fees, to encourage independent productions that promote Australia! The slick million dollar taxpayer funded tourism ad campaigns are not the only way to promote our wonderful country. With the advent of online video, Australian citizens should be allowed to film in their National Parks and feature their work online, without fear of fines or imprisonment. Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory is a great base from which to explore the Top End's many attractions. While in Darwin make sure you visit museum and it's fascinating Cyclone Tracey exhibition (Darwin was demolished by a cyclone in 1974), catch a movie at the open air deck chair cinema, feed the fish at aquascene, have a feed at the wharf precinct and check out one of the many fantastic markets. Darwin has a unique population mix with 75% of people aged under 25 years. It is also very multicultural, having over fifty different nationalities living harmoniously together. Out here in the outback, pubs and petrol stops are the hub of the universe. It is not unusual to travel 300 km between fuel stations. Renner Springs is one such stop, slap bang in the middle of nowhere. It is sustained by a natural spring. All fruit, vegetables and meat come from Adelaide 2,206 km south and petrol supplies are freighted 836 km from Darwin. Thirty minutes drive from Mt. Isa, West Leichardt station is a 310,000 acre cattle station. Up here there are two seasons, the dry and the wet. Currently it is the end of the dry season, a time of maintenance and repair. It's also a time of waiting...waiting for the first rains to hit. Surrounded by National Park, Cape Trib. is a truly beautiful location. But for the locals, life can tough, no grid power, the threat of cyclones, the mad heat and the relentless rain. Only a select few make it their home. I have organised an interview with a couple, Digby and Alison Gotts, who have been living in the rainforest for the last 12 years. They use solar panels for electricity and share there house with a multitude of forest creatures such as frogs, bats and snakes. They are virtually self sufficient with a fantastic exotic tropical fruit orchid and huge vegie patch. The Gotts have lived at Cape Tribulation for the last 12 years. In that time they have lived through 3 cyclones. Magnetic Island, ten minutes ferry ride from Townsville is unique in that it has a permanent residential population of about 2,000 people. This means unlike alot of 'resort' islands, Magnetic caters for all budgets. More than half the Island is national park and thus wildlife such as koalas, wallabies, possums and birdlife are plentiful. I didn't interview a local on Magnetic, I decided I would just concentrate on the natural beauty of the Island. Airlie Beach, gateway to the Whitsunday islands has a reputation for being a great place to party, in between sailing trips to the islands. The Gold Coast is one of Australia's most developed and commercial tourist locations. Once nothing more than sand fly invested swamp land, it is now highrise heaven, with a multitude of places tourist can stay. From Hippy to High Society. I am keen to interview a lady from the Gold Coast's social set. Someone with all the trimmings of wealth. Back in the early seventies Nimbin became the alternative lifestyle capital of Australia. Many of the original communes are still set up today. In recent times Nimbin has become infamous for it’s annual Mardi Grass festival which celebrates marijuana use. Interview with environmental artist, John Dahlsen. John makes a daily trip to the beach where he collects plastic waste washed up the night before. From this waste he creates art pieces. In the 1860s to the early 1900's, Echuca was a bustling port with paddlesteamers ferrying people and goods all through the the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee River systems. By the early 1970's, the port was derelict and unused. The council of the day decided that its paddlesteamer heritage was unique and started restoration of the port. Today the paddlesteamers are making a comeback. Many old sunken boats are being repaired to their former glory. Kevin Hutchinson is a Shipwright who has played a large role in the paddlesteamer revival. Cape Tribulation (pop.40) Surrounded by National Park, Cape Trib. is a truly beautiful location. But for the locals, life can tough, no grid power, the threat of cyclones, the mad heat and the relentless rain. Only a select few make it their home. I have organised an interview with a couple, Digby and Alison Gotts, who have been living in the rainforest for the last 12 years. They use solar panels for electricity and share there house with a multitude of forest creatures such as frogs, bats and snakes. They are virtually self sufficient with a fantastic exotic tropical fruit orchid and huge vegie patch. The Gotts have lived at Cape Tribulation for the last 12 years. In that time they have lived through 3 cyclones. Soundscapes and MetaphorsThe latest installment of my Camino journey is a little embarrassing to say the least. First there is my ‘Life is like the Camino’ Metaphor. A lot of people I met on the Camino used metaphors to explain their journey. It seemed everyone was searching for something, and all the myth and mysticism surrounding the Way lead to the some fairly interesting statements. And looking back, my second day ramblings, may have been a little precocious!Next there is my ‘recording the sounds of the Camino’ piece to camera. Fred Brophy's Boxing Troupe is the last tent operating in the world. Magnetic Island, ten minutes ferry ride from Townsville is unique in that it has a permanent residential population of about 2,000 people. This means unlike alot of 'resort' islands, Magnetic caters for all budgets. More than half the Island is national park and thus wildlife such as koalas, wallabies, possums and birdlife are plentiful. I didn't interview a local on Magnetic, I decided I would just concentrate on the natural beauty of the Island. I got some great wildlife shots and the beaches and bays are to die for.
