Peter Poemel takes us through scaling a download infrastructure with success. Increasing popularity leads to technical challenges. He describes how the openSUSE infrastructure serves millions of download requests, employing a system of mirrors and mod_zrkadlo, a redirection module for the Apache HTTP server. Peter talks about the backgrounds of redirection using IP geolocation, functioning of the redirector, its implementation and how to use it. He also shows how to deal with mirrors which may be out of date, incomplete, or unreliable.
