A two day climb up El Chachani, a 6,075m peak in southern Peru near Arequipa. This was a great adventure. We drove 90km, mostly along rough dirt roads out of Arequipa to 4,800m and hiked 1.5 hours to our base camp at 5,100m. After a nap, setting up camp and having some dinner we made an early bid for bed.Wake up was at 1am and after a humble breakfast, we were hiking again by 2am under a clear stary sky. Lots of slow climbing in the cold and dark led to a beautiful sunrise and finally we reached the summit by 8am.After an hour on the summet, we turned back and we back at camp in a mere 3 hours. After a 45 minute jeep ride from Moshi, we start hiking from Machame Gate (1,800m) up to Machame Camp (2,900m) over 17km. Machame Hut (3,000m) to Shira Camp (3,840m). Only 7km but we take it very slow to acclimate. The canopy has opened up and the view of the sea of clouds below us is incredible. Shira Camp to Barranco Camp. Climb high, sleep low is the order of the day. We will gain almost 1,000m (3,000ft) to Lava Tower at 4,693m (15,380ft). Lava tower is a little jut of cooled magma just off the trail, an optional climb and the most technical part of our trip. After reaching the peak of Lava Tower, it was a 900m descent to Barranco Camp for the night. Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp. The day starts with an intense climb. The Barranco Wall, also known as the breakfast wall because it is the first thing you climb out of camp, is a 300m/1,000ft vertical climb on narrow mountain goat like trails up this cliff. Barafu Camp to Summit. The day starts at Midnight. Eric and I rummage in the dark tent to find our summit kit and head up the mountain. The stars are all we can see through the dark hours of the morning until the celestial beams warm the horizon and the barren landscape livens up around us. The rim of the crater bears a strong wind and we push our way around to the true summit, Uhuru Peak by 8am. Barafu Camp to Exit. After we retruned to Barafu camp from the summit, we were served a hot lunch in our tents and then took a nap from 11am to 2pm when we packed up and headed on down to Mweka Camp, our last camp on the trip.
