In 2010, city, school, and community leaders joined with residents to form the Promise Neighborhood Initiative, to work together on a plan that expands the opportunities for all children and adults to succeed in or return to an education plan that prepares them for the workforce of the future. Thanks to a planning grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the Eastside Promise Neighborhood Initiative intends to coordinate the collective assets, resources and investments of the neighborhood, including residents, schools and community leaders in the area. The schools participating in the Promise Neighborhood Initiative include Tynan Early Childhood Center, Bowden, Washington and Pershing Elementary schools, and Wheatley Middle School.
