The Alexander Technique and Young People at Friends House, Covent Garden, London.Peter Buckoke is a bass player working in the London musical scene. He trained with the Ribeauxs about twenty years ago. Peter has developed the three Alexander elements in the degree at the Royal College of Music. He has written articles for ‘The Double Bassist’ and ‘The Strad’ about applying the technique to playing musical instruments. In 2006 he was invited to Beijing to give workshops in how to apply the technique to playing the Double Bass. Peter’s contribution to the evening will be a description of the Alexander work within the degree at the RCM, with some practical examples, how the work is delivered and how it is assessed. Judith Kleinman originally trained as a musician at the Guildhall School of Music where she first came across the Alexander Technique. She subsequently trained to be an Alexander teacher with Shoshana Kamanitz and Mr Macdonald. She currently teaches Alexander at the RCM and the Junior Royal Academy. She also teaches on the LCATT training course in Highbury London. For some years Judith helped to run the Arts and Education Committee of STAT. She has collaborated with Sue Merry, running workshops, writing and giving lectures on teaching the Alexander Technique to young people. Sue and Judith are currently organizing a website about teaching youngsters the Alexander Technique. They gave the STAT 2000 memorial lecture on the history and style of teaching young people from Alexander’s ‘Small School’ to the present day. Judith and Peter have home educated their teenage boys and live in London. Judith’s part of the evening will be about her work with younger teenagers. How she introduces the work and how it can enhance young people’s curiosity, creativity and confidence.
