No Keys

About this original series

Documentation of "No Keys," a multimedia dance work performed at Greene Naftali Gallery, June 21 - June 23, 2007. Choreography and sound by Nancy Garcia. At the moment, the sound is "lo-fi" and requires editing. Keep that in mind while viewing. Actual version of the audio available upon request. Greene Naftali began its group exhibition, Genesis I’m Sorry, with No Keys, a new dance and sound performance installation by Nancy Garcia.Through dance and live sound within and throughout the 4-room gallery, five performers activate the space with various rhythms using movement, electric guitars and vocal sounds. Amidst guitar cables and a sound installation, sisters sing deconstructed versions of their favorite songs. You'll watch their relationships to each other in action, reproducing themselves and destroying old forms of themselves through repetition.Performing, recording and composing music with her band Monotract since 1998, Garcia's music practice intersects with her dance practice. She has collaborated as a solo musician with artists such as Thurston Moore, Spencer Yeh and Aida Ruilova. As a member of Monotract, she has performed throughout the US, Japan and Europe, and played festivals such as All Tomorrow's Parties.

    • Rock Moves & Container Movement

This excerpt begins with a section called "Rock Moves." I stole dance moves from various live music performers (Tina Turner, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Kim Gordon, Ari Up from the Slits, Jim Morrison), altered them, and composed them into a movement phrase. The second section of this excerpt is called "Container Movement" and begins after we complete the unison lunges with arms reaching forward. In rehearsal, the dancers responded to the following instruction: move within a container. We improvise...

    • Biba's Cave Movement

We call this phrase "cave movement." This is actually Biba's cave movement, which she came up with in rehearsal. This is Jackie performing it. Biba executes this same movement in one of the other rooms simultaneously. You will see Biba briefly in the shot (on the left), as the camera pans for a moment. From the beginning of the creation process, we improvised in the studio with the concept of the container in mind. This particular movement phrase is derived from an instruction given to Jackie ...
