'A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.'- Henrik Ibsen This quote rings true for Make The Road NY, a grass roots organization that has empowered residents to take the helms of their own communities since the 1990s. Their mission promotes economic justice, equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers through community and electoral organizing, strategic policy advocacy, leadership development, youth and adult education, and high quality legal and support services. (www.maketheroadny.org) Not an easy task, especially in a neighborhood like Bushwick, which has suffered through economic meltdowns, planned disinvestment, and is now feeling the effects of gentrification. But in spite of these challenges, many residents, most from low-income immigrant communities, have been able to improve the overall quality of life for themselves, their families, and their neighbors. In this segment, we learn about the strides being made through campaigns created by neighborhood youth leaders surrounding police accountability, educational justice, and gentrification and how their united voices are making a difference.
