About this episode

TV-UN

Earlier this year nearly 700,000 used cars were traded in and sent to be scrapped under the federal Car Allowance Rebate System, or “Cash for Clunkers.” Although it is illegal to resell any car accepted into the Cash for Clunkers program, there’s widespread concern that many of these vehicles will show up for sale around the country. So how can you know if the used car you’re buying was actually meant for the scrap heap? Carfax, working with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), has added the vehicle identification number of every car in the “Cash for Clunkers” program to its database. To help consumers protect themselves, Carfax now makes this information available for free at www.carfax.com/clunkers.
