http://momentofyouth.org On October 14th Canada will hold a federal election. You decide who will form this country’s government if you’re 18 years of age and a Canadian citizen by this date. You vote. There are 308 ridings—or districts—in Canada and you live in one of them. In your riding, candidates from political parties are competing right now for your vote because they want a seat in the House of Commons in Ottawa, where they will become your Member of Parliament – your MP. Your MP will make decisions that WILL affect your life. The political party with the most number of MPs forms the Government and the leader of this party becomes the Prime Minister. The Conservative Party of Canada is currently our minority government and they haven’t been able to get what they want done because they have less than half of the 308 seats in the House of Commons and they depend on votes from other parties to pass laws. So they called an election in the hope of winning more seats to form a *majority* government and pass laws basically unchallenged. Now that the election campaigns are under way, I wish I could say that over the next few weeks, you would hear from parties about why you should send their candidate to the House of Commons, but you won’t. Instead, you’re more likely to hear attack ads directed at party leaders: “This Liberal is not a leader. This Conservative has a hidden agenda. This New Democrat has a funny moustache.” Do they even know what you want? What matters to you enough that you would go to the polls on October 14th and help shape this country with your vote? It’s up to you to make them listen. So tell us and tell Canada what you expect from your government by going to momentofyouth.org. Express yourself by posting your thoughts via You Tube or text -- any way you want – but do it now.
