Nothing overtly said, "Ka-Pow!" but today's show found Phillip Lim kicking around the idea of superheroes, a theme he had started to explore in his pre-fall collection. "It's this idea of modern-day superheroes who are walking around us every day," the designer said after the show. If that sounded slightly abstract, the collection was largely grounded in reality. Lim did open with a cape, but the resounding message of his mostly monochromatic and minimal parade of sleek jackets, deconstructed sturdy ribbed knits, sharply creased trousers, and great tailored coats was simply this: strong clothes for strong women. (Having said that, which of us doesn't believe in the power of clothing to produce something akin to a phone booth transformation?) Lim also had ideas about duality. There was dark versus light in the punchy graphic interplay of pieces delineated in black and white, and hard versus soft in the weaponlike pointy toes of ladylike pumps. A smoke machine (apparently turned to 11) set a noir-ish stage, telling you all wasn't as it seemed. Nothing evil was lurking, and, quite frankly, nothing too surprising, just the slightly surreal twist of cardigans turned back to front or upside down, along with collarless coats with indented flat collars and trompe l'oeil metal collars. The strains of "This Is a Man's World" began to play mid-show, though it could have looped throughout. There was only one look that even approximated something cocktail-appropriate. Count Ohne Titel's Alexa Adams and Flora Gill among the several designers playing with the idea of protection this week: clothing as shield against harsher elements. Underlining the idea of cocooning, smooth black caps, a collaboration with Albertus Swanepoel, were pulled low over models' eyes while faces were often half buried in funnel-like circular scarves. After venturing in a more colorful and feminine direction last season, Adams and Gill proclaimed a return to something tougher and architectural. The overall look was sleeker, harkening back to their urban-warrior roots and the fierce luxury of tops pieced out of shearling, leather, and fur that snapped insiders to attention a few seasons ago.But there was evidence here of attempting to bridge the difference. The zippered jacket on the first look out, for instance, had the feel of an armored doublet, but turned a bit sweeter with a pleated skirt. Keeping to a tight color palette of mostly black and white—an idea inspired by textile artist Sheila Hicks, who wove newspaper into some of her work—the designers used their wicked knitting skills to create great graphic jacquard textures, an element that was the highlight of this show. Knitting nerds take note: The technique required a special machine. Another sweater-y standout: The poor-boy-style knit with rippling stripes in a cardigan and calf-length dress. When it came to wovens, the duo continued their successful run of slouchy pull-on pants, here in a great feathery animal print, and tailored jackets. In the end, it was only the silk dresses, like the two that closed the show, that felt like a work in progress. After brief internships in the fashion industry, Timo Weiland and Alan Eckstein met and quickly developed a compelling dialogue, which ultimately led to a design partnership. Their journey allowed them to discover not only new landscapes but the most varied of artistic, cultural and philosophical expressions. Amongst the things they found to be most worthy of interest were the typically Californian style they saw on the surfers who lived in the southern part of the state and the psychedelic look they observed in the northern part. The brothers were impressed by the colorful and innovative fashion trends they came across, and in particular the style of the tops and T-shirts which didn’t exist in Spain in those days. Using the above as a starting point, the brand was launched under the name “Custo Line”. The Dalmau brothers got to work and learned everything there was to know about printing techniques and finishings, paying special attention to graphic design, a field they felt particularly comfortable with. Through time, their research on the use of color and prints has given risen rise to designs that are innovative, bold and sophisticated. A Détacher embraced both sides of the color spectrum for Fall 2012. We saw a heavy dosage of blacks as well as punches of color and slightly enlarged sleeves. Despite there being a plethora of prints including polka dots and florals, the collection itself had a pleasant streamlined cohesiveness. We were especially fond of the oversized black coat that opened the show. The simple lines and shape it created while flowing down the runway was a great way to capture the audiences interest and hold it even beyond the finale walk. Did we mention we couldn’t get enough of the orange accents that appeared? The orange band on a wide scoop neck top and orange armor-esque portion of the black dress popped out at us. The hair and makeup also made us look twice. Some models stormed out with heavy lashes on the top and bottom eyelid, making it easy for them to say “My eyes are up here” without ever saying a word. Quirky. Streamlined. As different as they may seem, both of these adjectives can be applied to the A Détacher Fall 2012 collection and we applaud them for being able to marry the two together. Inspired by Kafka’s “Metamorphosis,” Sally LaPointe sent out her most sophisticated lineup to date that consisted mostly of monochromatic layered column trousers ranging from gold sequin to muted gray along with cropped, structured jackets and flowing tunics. Fashion designer Choonmoo Park was born in Kimje, a small town in the southern part of Korea, where her family owned a children’s apparel company. A happy fixture in her father’s factory and showroom, Park was fascinated by the transformative and reflective nature of clothing and hence, her love of fashion was born. After her family moved to Seoul, Park attended Hong-Ik University, where she majored in industrial design, followed by the Kookje Fashion School where she studied fashion design. Her industrial design roots are evident in her fashion designs and have defined her compelling aesthetic. Park has been at the forefront of Korean avant garde design since 1988, when she launched her label DEMOO. Subsequently, she launched her eponymous line, PARKCHOONMOO. Responding to high demand, the designer opened her first retail store in 1988 in trendy Apgujungdong (Korea) and expanded quickly into other Asian markets. Since then, her designs have become iconic of a modern, architectural and yet fluid style. Underlying her edgy but wearable designs is an artistic sensibility and superb fit derived from couture roots translated into ready-to-wear. Park favors the striking impact of monotones such as black and white, punctuated by counterpoints of color, and layering to create new combinations that have become a signature of the PARKCHOONMOO aesthetic. Park has won numerous accolades including Presidential Awards. Most recently, Park was voted one of the most influential designers of 2010. She has the honor of serving as Chairman of NWS (New Wave in Seoul), a leading fashion association in Korea and is the new President elect of the FGI (Fashion Group International) on the Board of Directors in Seoul. Park has shown her collections in Korea, Japan and France, and has been invited to participate in other significant shows worldwide. In a time when many designers are cautious about expansion, Park confidently is moving forward to launch in the US. She participated in CONCEPT KOREA, a fashion presentation and installation sponsored by the Korean government with the CFDA at the NY Public Library during New York Fashion Week in 2010. Bumsuk Choi, the name behind the menswear label, General Idea, launched his debut collection in the Spring of 2004 at the age of 26 making him the youngest designer to join the Seoul Collection in the Republic of Korea. Since the start of General Idea, Bumsuk has succeeded in building an international brand as well as collaborating with many major labels worldwide. In 2006 Choi designed the RENAULT F1 Team’s Formua 1 race car. Mike Vensel is an American fashion designer/artist/photographer born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up along the east coast of the United States. From an early age he had an interest in art and design, and went on to study architecture in Miami, later moving to LA to study graphic and fashion design where he now lives and works. Extensive travel has had a major impact on his work and stylistically he has developed and international style that draws from many cultural influences as well as transcendence of time. His goal is to create work which is not just a reflection of our current time, but of all time and all influence, organic and omnipresent. Much of Vensel’s work is focused on architectural themes mated with natural elements. Most of the collections are annual ideas of a much broader theme broken into seasonal sub collections. For many of the collections he will pick an architectural icon and an animal and from two distinctly different perspectives arrive at common design language which transcends all of the source material while maintaining subtle hints of its origin. This way the work cannot be defined in simple terms and the subject matter becomes layered and then compressed to a singular minimal theme. Many of his works are reduced to the least amount of material, sewing, and variation as possible as to emulate a second skin, one which can travel from day tonight and adapt to all situations living with its owner in harmony and becoming part of their lifestyle. Born in Canton, China, Vivienne Tam moved to Hong Kong when she was three years old. Since then, the dynamic combination of cultures in the then British colony has been the essence of her signature East-meets-West style. Always interested in fashion, and with a degree from Hong Kong Polytechnic University-- a pioneer in fashion training in Asia—- in her pocket, Vivienne Tam moved to New York. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Nanette produced her first couture look at the tender age of nine outfitting a neighbor in a floral bedspread, beaded choker, and face paint. The girl posed in the family’s front yard behind a hand-lettered sign declaring “Lepore,” and thus began Nanette’s lifelong interest in fashion. Sensing young Nanette’s entrepreneurial talent, her parents encouraged her creativity. After all, artistic innovation flourished naturally in a household headed by an abstract painter-father and a fabulously stylish mother of four. Road tripping on Route 66 with her bohemian parents each summer instilled in Nanette a free spirit and a taste for travel. After completing her undergraduate studies at Youngstown University, she packed her bags and headed east to New York City’s venerable Fashion Institute of Technology. She aced her degree in design, married painter Robert Savage and set out to pay her dues in design studios around town. However, Nanette knew she wouldn’t be satisfied until her creations bore her own name. In 1992, bolstered by a $5,000 loan from her dad to strike out on her own, Nanette set up shop in a penthouse office in the garment district. It quickly became an incubator for poets and painters who would bounce ideas off one another while stargazing on the roof. Nanette designs in her atelier in New York City alongside her husband, Robert, who helms the business side of the worldwide brand as its President. Armed with an innate drive and a degree in business from Michigan State University, Pamella built an extensive background in marketing and public relations, working nearly 10 years in both corporate and agency environments. While living in Japan promoting family business interests, she quickly put her expertise to work in support of the arts as a director of public relations efforts for the prestigious National Art Show of the College Women's Association of Japan. Dennis Basso has long been considered one of America’s premiere celebrity designers. From the time he started his business in 1983 to the present, his collections have always won rave reviews from both the American and international press. WILDFOX COUTURE is an American Vintage-inspired women's knitwear brand. Посвятив свою коллекцию дочерям Марии и Даниэле, Лена Карнаухова не стала отходить слишком далеко от базовых ценностей своих предыдущих летних коллекций, построив и эту на базе легких монохромных летних платьев.
