Mike Vensel is an American fashion designer/artist/photographer born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up along the east coast of the United States. From an early age he had an interest in art and design, and went on to study architecture in Miami, later moving to LA to study graphic and fashion design where he now lives and works. Extensive travel has had a major impact on his work and stylistically he has developed and international style that draws from many cultural influences as well as transcendence of time. His goal is to create work which is not just a reflection of our current time, but of all time and all influence, organic and omnipresent. Much of Vensel’s work is focused on architectural themes mated with natural elements. Most of the collections are annual ideas of a much broader theme broken into seasonal sub collections. For many of the collections he will pick an architectural icon and an animal and from two distinctly different perspectives arrive at common design language which transcends all of the source material while maintaining subtle hints of its origin. This way the work cannot be defined in simple terms and the subject matter becomes layered and then compressed to a singular minimal theme. Many of his works are reduced to the least amount of material, sewing, and variation as possible as to emulate a second skin, one which can travel from day tonight and adapt to all situations living with its owner in harmony and becoming part of their lifestyle.
