Gilles Mendel began his career by apprenticing under his father, Jacques, at the eponymous J. Mendel fur salon in Paris. In 1981, he came to the helm as designer and CEO opening his first J. Mendel Boutique at Elizabeth Arden’s Fifth Avenue Salon. Once Established in New York, Mendel quickly became a favorite among the chic set in Manhattan. In 1985, he relocated his fur collections to a boutique at 723 Madison Avenue, which still serves as the company’s U.S. flagship. Continuing in the couture tradition of the house, Gilles Mendel brought the company to another level with the launch of a full scale ready-to-wear collection in 2002. This marked the tremendous growth of J. Mendel as an established luxury brand. His penchant for maintaining the highest level of craftsmanship when manipulating luxury fabrics in unexpected ways has attracted a wide range of top tier clientele who appreciate his gift for timeless, cutting-edge, and exquisitely produced fashions. In recognition of his achievements in women’s fashion, Mendel was inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2003. Since his induction, Mendel has shown his Spring and Fall collections biannually during New York’s Fashion Week and recently added Pre-Fall and Resort/Pre-Spring collections to his ready-to-wear line. While today there are boutiques worldwide, J. Mendel remains a company focused on the original founding principles.
