On 14th March 2008 a steam hauled test train of 10 coaches ran on the newly rebuilt section of the Welsh Highland Railway, not yet open to the public, from Rhyd Ddu to Hafod-y-llyn and back. This was the first steam train through the Aberglaslyn Pass for 70 years. Much of the route is on a 1:40 gradient. The diesel, Funkey "Castel Caernarfon" was there only as backup.
