Today on MD-VOD, Dr. John Kennedy is joined by board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jay Granzow to learn about breast cancer. Together they examine the cause of breast cancer, who is at risk, the symptoms, how it’s diagnosed and available medications, treatments and therapies. They further discuss the consequences and the realities of living with breast cancer, including insurance coverage and related costs.
Today, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. We do not know what causes breast cancer, although we do know that certain risk factors may put you at higher risk for developing it. Your age, genetics, health history, and diet all contribute to breast cancer risk.
The most common symptoms of breast cancer that you should look for are:
• A mass or lump in or near the breast or underarm area
• A change in the size, shape, or contour of the breast
• Blood-stained or clear fluid discharge from the nipple
• A change in the feel or appearance of the skin on the breast or nipple
• and a change in the shape or position of the nipple
Dr. Granzow points out that it is best to practice a weekly self-examination of the breasts. This way, you will be familiar with your breasts and be able to notice changes. If changes do occur, you will be more likely to discover them early and be better equipped to treat this disease.
