I've known Howard since 1985, my first year at SIGGRAPH. I had driven up to SF and on the way home, we stopped into a Party Howard was throwing. It featured the Fairlight Computer Video Instrument. Nine years later I moved to SF from Maui to ground my vision of Creativity Cafe. I had just seen the Fairlight CVI in action at the Zippys Tour along with CU-SeeMe video conferencing on the Web. That experience led to my producing a year later in May of 1995, KidCast for Peace: Solutions for a Better World; the worlds first multinode CUSeeMe video conference on the Web featuring children at risk in different parts of the world (there were 4 or 5 nodes). We asked the kids to make art that suggests what the "adults" should do for a change (for change)! Howard later arrived (following in my footsteps) on Maui in 1991 or so (following in my footsteps). We hung out there together as the Supercomputer was just coming online. I have this great graphic I did of him along with Captain Sally, Remember it Howard? I'll have to scan it when I get back to Maui as I don't think I have copy of the digital file anymore? Today's video conference was a real flashback to my early video conferencing days when I produced KidCast for Peace (a total of 18 times in 10 years) as sample programming for Creativity Cafe Edutainment Venues. In the near future, multi-node video conferencing will be the norm and will help facilitate Cyber-Physical big screen Creativity Cafe Edutainment Venues in various geographies. As usual there were techno-gremlin's about. When people don't all use headsets, audio feedback and resultant squelching becomes a problem. One possible solution could be for those needing to use speaker systems (a room full of folk), is to flip the speaker phase. With one of the speakers, exchange right (+) and left (-) wires. It was great to see Howard conducting his Tethered Tribe and talk story with everyone. I wish someone were taping it. I took the bus in from NJ to Port Authority @ 40thy St. and 8th Ave. Then walked cross town (about 20 minutes) to the UN at 45 St. and First Ave. After security, I wandered up to the General Assembly Great Hall to find a seat, BUT before I could enter the hall, there to my utter delight, was the one person who never fails to inspire at a Sunday Service to Spirit, Dr Michael Beckwith of Agape Church International in Los Angeles. I JUST HAD TO DOCUMENT MY HAVING TWO OF THESE AWESOME INSTRUMENTS. HOWEVER.....THE JOY WILL BE SHORT LIVED. There was a major screwup. Instead of receiving the guitar (ordered 9 Dec.2011) I was sent just a guitar bag/case in a box- but NO GUITAR, just the bag and invoice for the guitar. I was charged $199 for the missing guitar! That caused a day of discovery and chasing down those responsible. Yesterday, 01/04/12 I received guitar order #3, after the second one (ordered 15 Dec) had a problem, that as it turns out, the 3rd instrument shares as well? Maybe there is a bug in the software/circuitry? Anyone else experiencing odd behavior? You should hear the rest of the story. I'd love to hear your experience if you noticed something odd or problematic? Almost! Time Lapse video of the one that go awsy! THREE TIMES!!!! I reset the trap and sure enough, the mousse came back for more.... and barely escaped with its life in this amazing video. The trapped mouse somehow got thrown with the set off trap...and lived to tell his friends. Produced in 1986 and 1987 with help from Frank Fairweather on Video Editing and Gary Geller on Music Recording. Staring Harry Rosenfeld = Camel Tender, Liza Pharow = Female Lead, Peter Rosen = Male Lead, Gary Geller = Dancer. I recorded the track, my first MIDI production over the course of 1986 and the video was shot on a trip to the Integratron in Landers California. The video was composited with frame by frame animation I produced on Frank Fairweather's Amiga computer using Digi Paint and was in some cases (the dancing camels) recorded live as I attached the camel caravan to the mouse (as a brush) against a color cycling sky. The computer graphic and video editing session took 40 hours with nary a break. I post this as my way of honoring those who helped make the movie and to thanking Frank Fairweather [famed star of the LA-Final Cut User's group] posthumously as he has changed his address. This was the very first music video I produced with a lot of help from friends. I recently uncovered the VHS copy of 3/4" edit. I wrote the song in 1975, my first year in California after driving a cab in NYC for the last 5. It was also my first MIDI project with this mix produced at Santa Monica College with the help of then video engineer, Gary Geller. I played all instruments and sang the off key delivery of the lyric, written in 20 minutes, at Fidelity Studios waiting room. I was there because Jimmy Calvert and Norman Marzano were laying some tracks. After the 8 track mix was made (I still have the 1 inch tape), Gary, Liza Pharow, my first cyber pal met via a BBS and many years later, in person and myself headed to Joshua Tree - to the Integratron, in my beloved Dodge white tradesman van that served as home on wheels for 12 years. After recording the footage of us playing around without a storyboard (and with the stuffed banana we found by the side of the road). He is survived by his son, whom he left after a sudden passing at the time he was KING OF FINAL CUT users groups in LA. He'd brought his Amiga Computer to the video edit suite so I could make and animate the Computer Graphics. He did the tape op and editing, some of the recording of cgi was live (the camel's dancing) most other was frame by frame recording onto 3/4 inch. Unfortunately the VHS copy is full of chroma aberration and drop out. I tried to start up DP 7.22 and all I got was windows rapidly popping on and off in various states of transparency but never showing any window detail, like, files, notes, etc. just strobing-cycling windows at about 30 frames a second!!! flashing across my screen. What state of mind was the software in? I love this series of shots sewn together. They were taken with the Canon Rebel Xsi 450D in NJ in March 2010. Anne and I took turns while the slow shutter captured us shaking the flower petals off the trees. The burst of 10 frames at 1/6 sec exposure when put together in Quicktime created this wonderfully pleasing look and feel to the video. While waiting for mom to recover from her surgery, I took solace at the keys, missing my beloved new friend APT severely. I had been eyeing that piano as I do all piano's I come across (or in the case of hotels, search out). Nothing soothes my soul like playing a piano. So when I was refused playing privileges by the bureaucracy (they had me fill out a volunteer form and told me I might get a spot in six months), I took matters into my own hands -- as I often do when I come up against "mans laws." On the weekend, the Gestapo were not around, so I sat and played, recording on my iPhone using iPro Recording software by Peak. I made this movie as a test after seeing what peeps in Japan are doing with light painting animation. My new Canon Rebel 450 has a feature where it can shoot a series of up to 10 shots automatically. So I can stay in place and slightly alter my moves, position and movements for each successive frame! A day in the life. The images start with a long haired blond walking around with her underwear showing. Zantar showed up next(white beard taught me to swim like a fish back in 1986, my 2nd trip to Maui) followed my Mac and Media buddy, Ken. He told me about the Indian Dance performance that had caught my eye. I went and wound up with my tripod inside the Castle Theater and got a nice little "animation"of the dancers, befriended the Audio Engineer (Steve) and said hi to a gal I would love to have as a friend at least, but she never returned my call, told me she was working and didn't have time to talk the two times I called her. I didn't realize who is was. I might have chatted her up, but at halftime, I'd gone out to the Big Tree to practice my light painting and go fishing.Fishing for a woman whom I could fall in love with and visa versa. One came along and was willing to play. The first shot has her in a nice dance pose and well lit face. She was ready to do it again, when in my excitement, I was rushing to get back to the camera, lost my footing and my body went out of control falling forward faster than I could get my feet under me, the ground was getting closer and closer as I headed for the pavement. My left shoe caught and did me in, as I wiped out on the concrete. A spactular site that drew 3 security folks and some onelookers. The gal asked if I'm ok. NO! was my immediate response. I was bleeding very minorly from my elbow, knee, right palm and left toe. My left wrist is not unable to support weight. Its the next day and I am still really hurting all over. The gal tells me shes a massage therapost and I get her number, and that she has a photographer boy friend. Damn. I said. Thats a lousy way to have to get attention! Don't tell him how I do it. I went back into the theater and on the way saw her describing my technique. LOL. I noticed the gal sitting by the sound guy and she looked familiar but it wasn't until the end when I went over to him, that I realized (after I was walking away after saying a brief Hi to her) who it was. But I was in too much pain to act or bark up her tree, still stinging from my fall and the realization that she never called me back to get the fantastic photos I'd taken of her at Little Beach. The opening images are of one Christiane Covington who Maxine's Medicine has been dedicated to. She was a guest in my home when her time on the planet ended. She was a new friend and somehow wanted me to be part of her Earth Parting Party. My friend against corporate crime, gave me Maxine (I named my Med Marijuana plant) as a Thanksgiving Day present last Nov 27th. I took the clone and grew it, transplanted it and watered-fertilized it through middle of March. It had been under a grow light in my bathroom (I have a medical marijuana license) but it hardly grew, until.... I left Maui to visit my mother on the East Coast who was going to have cateracts removed. Maxine was nowhere ready to be harvested so for the 5 weeks I was away, I let my grower friend take care of her. Boy! Did he ever do a good job or what! My scrawny little plant blossomed into a "mini tree" that yeilded about 8 ounces of sativa. You should see the time lapse movie of me harvesting it (link will appear, check back). I enjoyed making this little movie for you with help from my rainbow flashlight and trusty Canon Rebel. Altered States is the dissolution of my alter that had been set up when I took possession of my new digs on Maui after moving back from SF in 1999. I set up a camera attached to my computer running BTV software, to take a photo every 10 seconds. After each shot, I moved something, waited for the shutter and repeated with something else until all objects were off the box that I had used to ship parts of my SF office back to Maui in.Now the tricky part. I reset the imaging system to take a photo every 70 seconds after using a high stool, to get into the uprighted box. I had already taken the series of images at 30 second intervals where I slowly propped up the empty box until I was able to get into it.I closed the end of the box from inside it (which was no small accomplishment) and then squatting, counted to 70 (so I had enough time between shots) for the camera to record a frame, before unsquatting just a little bit more as I poked my head more and more out of the box with each frame. It was hell for some of those middle positions to hold the squat, fighting gravity for all the time between exposures. Then I realized I could get the stool in the box with me to lean on, which made my body's compression much easier to take. I composed the music in GarageBand using virtual instruments triggered with my Oxygen 8v2 midi controller, and then married the sound with the images in Apple Quicktime. I composed the music the night before using Apple Garageband and my M-Audio Oxygen 8v2 midi keyboard controller. These images chronicle a day in my life and experimentation with my latest "brush" with which I do my light painting.I am moving into performance and animation with this technique called PikaPika (from Japanese artists) like the video of my smiley heart posted here on Blip. The dancers are on stage at the Maui Art and Cultural Center. I had a tripod with me and used that to steady the camera in the theater. A chance meeting at Borders in Kahului Maui leads to a break in my rather solitary cycle to enjoy to company of strangers... and friends whom I rarely see. But it so happened, on the weekend of Dec 6,7,8 2008 it was the most wonderful contact with humanity, old and new friends. Sunow and Spirit of the Radiance Healing Center told me of a benefit in their honor Saturday night. The images show our meeting at Borders and the next day at their gathering. Earlier I had run into Milan (and Rose shown in the door) who was helping Elbee buy furniture at a garage sale just outside my building. We met, I showed them my studio and agreed to see them later. When I got to the other side of Maui after a 30 minute drive, I was in great back pain. Searing fire in my spine that usually I can operate in spite of. Not this night. I was bummed. Everyone was happily jumping and dancing, smiling and having fun. I was alone and miserable. I headed for the first place (thankfully) that was available to lay down and just watched - once more the observer as I so often am. Mostly I like it that way. I always loved watching people and groking their experiences vicariously from a distance. Sahajo came over to ask how I was. I replied truthfully, wracked in pain. She said get on the massage table and began to work on me. I thought there was a charge but she said not to worry about it. Soon another person walked up and asked if she could also work on me at the same time. I was being touched by 4 loving hands and getting the body work I need so badly. I keep looking for good people. Afterwards, I took their cards so I could employ their services. I had a long telephoto lens on my Canon Rebel which led to the Devil. I fired off a bunch of shots of our hosts and their happening. The light caught their wide open pupils at just the right angle to heighten the red-eye effect of the flash. Enjoy the devil eyes. Sunday I interviewed a woman desiring to be my apprentice. I took her to my studio and then to little beach. I was thinking of going there anyway (or to Windcloud's for music making). I opted to help the woman out with a ride and see if Amanda - who was a fantastic Spirit Body Process Photographic model a few weeks back - was at Little Beach. We had created an awesome Spirit Body Process image I will share elsewhere. Its Richard's Birthday today so I am posting this for him! as well as for Joe and Donna. At Little Beach (where nudists can sunbathe on Maui) I set up for a Spirit Body light painting and waited for a model. I saw a beautiful, totally naked woman not far off up the bluff. But every time I thought to approach her, I was met with internal resistance. I just could not bring myself to walk up to a strange naked woman; part of two couples and ask her to model in front of her boyfriend. Then she put on her clothes and together with the other woman walked towards me. There were not two couples. The two gals had nothing to do with the two guys. Not only that but It turned out I know and had dated the beautiful woman! It was great to see Stephanie and exchange hugs. There was obviously still an attraction. She is going to the Mainland for the holidays. She promised to be in touch upon her return. Just about the time I will be heading for the Turk Islands with Marci from LA. This jam between Windcloud and I was recorded May 3, 1999 just before I went back to SF for the last time after 5 years trying to found Creativity Cafe there. It was the only time he stayed overnight with me in Kihei. I happened to have the video camera from Akaku Maui's community TV (public access) station so I put in a tape and out flowed what you see. Then I did some post processing using an archaic rainbow making tool, captured that with an archaic screen capture utility and put that together with our recording against a blue screen (airoplane blanket) i put up behind us for chromakey later. 2 weeks later I was on my way to close out my SF office and the words to Cool in the Shade named for Windy's words and the melody we came up with on tape. Only now the words were delivered by a higher source at 39K feet in the back of a 727 jet on the way to SFO. It was fun (and a bit annoying) to have groupies watch and listen as I softly strummed while singing the words i'd written in my head, They were trying to figure out who was that "rock star" with the curiously shaped (vagabond) guitar, writing in a note book. It was demo day at Maui Hawaii's Community Access TV Station, Akaku. I brought my laptop and Canon Video Camera tot he station to share a cool experience with the visiting students who had come to learn about producing TV. I approached the producer of the LIVE PROGRAM to tell her what I was doing so she could capture the kids being creative, but she never did bring the camera crew over. So, I posted here for you! Unity Church orgainzed this whale watch. I hung out with Ram Dass and was mostly by myself, taking photos, making music for everyone. This was perhaps the most copious whale producing sail of all my whale watches. Every where we looked, we were surrounded by whales. Sometimes the dolphin would play with them. As we headed to shore, a turtle bid us farewell. A great time was had by all! As a result, Harry King steps in with a Microphone and Gongmaster Don Conreaux suggests Peter perform one of his songs. Look at the larger image! I recorded a video this morning but the sound didn't get recorded. So I did a second take, but my frozen "lick stick" concoction had melted. So, I put the sound from recording number 2, onto video #1 and lo and behold, none of the words lined up with my mouth -- as you might expect from two snips recorded without a script or stopwatch. Yet amazingly, when I played video #1 with the #2 soundtrack "added and scaled" the sound was indeed out of sync except for THREE WORDS, MANGO AND BANANA! then my lips went back to moving randomly. I narrated this two minute presentation of my Creativity Cafe Concepts against a backdrop of the slides from my educators panel presentation at the prestigious SIGGRAPH International convention (where in 1998 I demonstrated a prototype Creativity Cafe in a weeklong exhibition). By a simple shift in approach and attitude, communities can harness the power of their creative people for local and global benefit. We can make a very big difference very fast (in the quality of life for Earths' peoples and in many other ways like global warming), especially if the leaders will catch-on, and cease and desist from NOT FIGURING HOW TO SHARE WITHOUT WAR AND GREED. Despite such incomprehensible actions (OK, I can see the reason why in previous mindset's, global development, consciousness and resource development). But now perhaps, this world would be a better place if all that mars energy were turned and focused on another shining star:Creativity Cafe: a proposed network of multimedia venue's that shape shift to support and nurture each individual, and harnesses the solution oriented creativity and synergies-of-community-members in a neighborhood networking parlor, edutainment broadcast center and cyberplay space for the whole family - that HAS ALREADY BEEN DEPLOYED (only needing activation by Creativity Cafe Concepts)I received a vision in 1980 of an artists resource and broadcast center that thanks to computer technology, could be many things to many people. What is needed most is education at the level a person needs it, mentoring in new tools, thought process and technologies and how patrons and the general public can be individually served mind food, resources and connections they/we need to succeed in making our lives more peace filled, our hearts and minds healed from fear and resentment, and a persons ability to be abundant doing what they love while benefiting others and our planet by practicing PRONOIA.
