About this original series

DIY film by Shaun Huston.I am on the geography and film studies faculty at Western Oregon University. I began working with digital video to get a different perspective on the kinds of issues I often address in my writing and teaching (composing for the film frame, the significance of different camera angles, etc.). I've also begun to use moving images to explore geographic themes, particularly ones related to place and landscape. My primary camera is a Panasonic DVX100A. I edit in Final Cut Express HD and Final Cut Pro. Some of my work is just me and my camera, and some is the result of collaborations with friends and colleagues. My current major project is about comics creators in Portland, Oregon USA: http://olympus_mons.typepad.com/pdxcomicsdoc

Use of or...

This is the Monmouth Film Collective's entry in the 2009 Portland, Oregon 48 Hour Film Project. We drew "drama" as our genre. Our script focuses on a family gathering in honor of an absent member. Virtually all of the dialogue is improvised. Actors knew (more or less) who their characters were and the scenario for each shot/scene and were directed to just start talking. Recording often started without the actors knowing that it had. The required elements for PDX this year were:Prop: picture fr...

    • Zico and his Ugly Doll

This is a short video of Anne-Marie's and my Brittany, Zico. Anne-Marie shot it on her Canon Elph less than twenty-four hours before we had to put him to sleep due to lung cancer. I'm posting it here so I can link to it elsewhere as we try to work through our feelings of grief and loss.
