He will draw lessons from recent debates on stem cells, euthanasia, refugee policy, the Aboriginal apology, and church handling of sexual abuse. <blip:puredescription>THE HONOURABLE FREDERICK CHANEY AO Reconciliation between Indigenous Australians and the settler society has followed a long and winding road. We have sought variously removal, dispersal, absorption, segregation, disappearance, and assimilation. For many, perhaps most, Australians the vision is of assimilation, them becoming indistinguishable from us. Yet through all the various approaches of our post settlement past the native people have endured. Australia has yet to get a clear sense of what the long term relationships might be but for schools the vision might be straightforward. A reconciled Australia would be one where the life possibilities for Aboriginal students might be the same as those for other Australian children. What would be required of schools to match that vision?</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>The Hon. Chief Justice Wayne Stuart Martin In this session, Chief Justice Wayne Martin will draw upon his experience in the courts to identify the effects which diminishing adherence to Christian ethics and spirituality are having upon standards of behaviour within our community. That analysis will provide the context for an evaluation of the vital importance of the infusion of the search for truth and justice as an integral component of a religious education, and the benefits of such an education to our community.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>KEYNOTE: PROF. VIVIANE ROBINSON In her keynote address, Professor Robinson presents an analysis of the evidence about how leaders make a difference to the social and academic outcomes of their students. A meta-analysis of this evidence showed that instructional leadership has three to four times more impact on student outcomes than transformational leadership. A second, more fine-grained analysis, revealed five leadership dimensions that have moderate to large effects on student outcomes: establishing goals and expectations; strategic resourcing; planning coordinating and evaluating teaching and the curriculum; promoting and participating in teacher learning and development; ensuring an orderly and supportive environment. The relative impacts of the five dimensions suggest that the closer leaders are to the core business of teaching and learning, the more likely they are to make a difference to student outcomes.
In addition to identifying and explaining these five dimensions, Professor Robinson will present new information on the leadership knowledge, skills and dispositions which underpin leaders’ ability to engage in these types of leadership in their own contexts. Professor Robinson’s keynote address is based on the findings of a recently completed Best Evidence Synthesis of international research on the relationship between school leadership and student outcomes. The synthesis is one of the outcomes of the New Zealand Ministry of Education’s iterative Best Evidence Synthesis programme.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>DR SHANE LAVERY CFC BA (La Trobe), B Ed (hons) UTas), BLitt, M Ed (Deakin), EdD (ACU) The session has three components: justice, truth, and empowerment. The initial question asked is: In what ways are our schools “just” institutions? School leadership is consequently viewed from a justice perspective. The second component considers the nature of truth from the standpoint of integrity. The question to be reflected upon is: What makes for a leader of truth, a leader of integrity? The final component involves exploring ways in which we can empower and challenge young people (students and staff) to be leaders of integrity and justice. The session will be interactive and participants will be expected to contribute within group activities.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>MR JACK DE GROOT At breakfast on Monday 2nd June, I sat with Joseph. It was his first break since Cyclone Nargis had wreaked havoc in Myanmar exactly one month earlier. He had been coordinating a national Church response for the Bishops of Burma since 2nd May. He and his colleagues had purchased and distributed emergency food, water and medicines quietly and quite literally out of the boots of cars to tens of thousands of people. For a month they had worked covertly in this way and know that they have months and months more of this sort of work. Pretty much alone, under surveillance and with the demands of an isolated and traumatized people at the forefront of their minds, their world demands our response. In February, I spent an hour with some rice farmers standing on top of 30 feet of pure Indian river sand in a northern part of Bangladesh. These farmers had lost their livelihoods as rice farmers, their farming land, their identity and were now facing entrenched poverty. All of this is the result of climate change demonstrated through the reality of unseasonal and extraordinarily intense floods in 2007. Floods that should have made the land productive now had poisoned the future. During World Youth Day, I met with a leading Latin American Church activist. He is a Cardinal. He told me one thing: “that 100 million people were added to the number of people living in extreme poverty this year according to one of the Directors of the World Bank. Why? Because of the global food crisis that had been compounded by the peak oil price and international credit crisis”. He then asked me one question. “Where are the poor in Australia? Are they hidden? You don’t have real poverty?” The people of the earth do not experience the same realities. Escalating food prices may bring a slight realignment of the household food budget in Australia but in other places it does mean a descent into abject poverty, malnutrition and conflict over scant resources. How does a Catholic leadership group defining itself as “Living the Vision´ respond to such inequity? What is the vision that you present to the students in your care that encompasses such diversity and fosters an appropriate response? How do Catholic institutions make sure that those living in poverty in our own state or neighborhood are not invisible? What response do we have to an extra 100 million people listed as living in poverty? In this session participants will be invited to look at the realities of their schools as part of a broader community. We are currently experiencing an era of strong global commitment to • making poverty history • the right to protect people who are extremely vulnerable, and • practical action to combat climate change How do leaders of Catholic communities respond to these larger callings to be a community in and for the world? How are we making the most of the disposition that solutions to poverty, climate change are possible, real and before us? How do we nurture an optimism that does abound at such a time?</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>NOT AN OPTION BUT AN IMPERATIVE: REINVENTING CATHOLIC SCHOOLING FOR GENERATION Y by DR LEONI DEGENHARDT The reality in which Gen Y moves is vastly different from that of their elders. The Knowledge Era has changed everything, even the relationship between the individual and society (Mason et al.). Yet the paradigm of schooling has remained largely unchanged since the industrial revolution. In Australia a national curriculum is being proposed, but this debate is centered around issues of content. Instead, we should be discussing how schooling can develop whole, healthy human beings who contribute to a ‘just society’. Such a paradigm of schooling needs to be developed from a top-down national approach as well as a bottom-up school-based approach.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>BISHOPS MANDATE Catholic schools are an important means through which the Church proclaims the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the world today. Students need to understand the Christian call to foster everything good and everything unifying in society from a Gospel perspective. All members of a Catholic school community have responsibilities relating to fostering this perspective. In particular, leaders within Catholic schools are called to promote its evangelisation purposes, aims and ethos, its development as a faith community , its religious dimensions and educational outcomes.</blip:puredescription>

<blip:puredescription>KEYNOTE ADDRESS - PROF. EMERITUS PATRICK A. DUIGNAN An organization’s mission and vision statements should act as a living charter for all its policies and practices. Living the vision and mission is a key challenge for leaders and other practitioners at all levels of the organization. In this session, I will explore how mission and vision can act as a charter for an organization and then discuss a number of implications of this viewpoint for its leaders. I will define leadership as an influence relationship and argue that the quality of a leader’s presence in his/her relationships will determine the degree of his/her influence. I will analyse the concept of presence from a number of dimensions, including its ministry and spiritual characteristics. I will also examine the conceptual and practical linkages among the terms leadership, relationships, influence and presence.</blip:puredescription>
